My wife pulled out a bag of old potatoes to make some potatoes for lunch. They have some very long eyes growing on them so she started just plucking them off. I say these are way too old to eat, and actually the thought of eating them makes me feel ill. She insists they are fine. What do you guys think? Pictures attached below.

I voted yes even though the links didn't work for me :)

Eyes are ok, if the skin is wrinkly at all though, chuck 'em.

edit: Oh the link worked this time.... dude throw them in the trash

If they have long things growing out of them, but they are still firm, then I eat them. They taste and feel the exact same.

However you have mushy, wrinkly potatoes. Toss them out, and spend the $1 for another 5 pound bag.

No, it looks too soft.

Plant it in the yard or something and grow your own potatoes for next time. :p

Thanks guys, you helped convince her to throw them away. Yeah, they are pretty squishy too.

aren't potato eyes poisonous or something? I realize you'd be plucking them off, but still. I'd throw it away.

Bah, I was close:

TOPIC: Sprouting potato - poisonous?
I have heard that if a potato or sweet potato starts to sprout leaves it becomes poisonous to eat. Is this true?

LANNICE SAYS:
The ultimate potato put-down is attributed to French gastronome Brillat-Savarin, with the words "I appreciate the potato only as a protection against famine." Happily, this utterance did little to dim the world's passion for this marvelous vegetable.

I haven't heard that sprouting potatoes or sweet potatoes are poisonous (if so, I would have poisoned my family many, many times over the years!) I simply rub off the sprouty parts and cook them as usual. Or bung them in the garden, and wait for a potato crop to grow!

Potatoes do tend to go 'vrot' quite quickly, so buy when they're in pristine condition (firm and smooth), select the right size for your purpose and buy in small quantities, so they?re as fresh as possible when you cook them.

Store potatoes in the dark, as light may cause immature tubers to turn green. This is when they contain the toxic alkaloid, solanine, which is present in a plant called woody nightshade (not to be confused with deadly nightshade, which is something else entirely). If you find green spots, simply cut them out; the rest of the potato will be fine.
