moral dilemma? That would last for about one day of starvation, maybe two if I got a spark of hope from some possible sign somewhere that possibly pointed to rescue in the sometime after now. You know how that goes.
I'd like to respect the dead, and that's why I'd give myself one last day or two of waiting to be rescued, trying to survive on any random scraps I could find to keep from passing out.
But survival is a different animal than civilized behavior. One should never expect such passive methods of life when your next hour isn't guaranteed. It is not morally wrong to
become such an
animal when the ends do justify the means for your continued existence. And hell, if there's some dead body over there that's not rotting yet (or was preserved, per the OP), and there's one or more starving humans, and the situation is food or rescue in the next three hours or we're dead? There's a choice in this matter?
Basic instinct and correct approach to life, for all creatures: preservation of the living, all goals oriented toward keeping you and yours in this game.
In a group of humans fighting nature and getting their asses handed to them, every action is (should be) directed toward keeping alive those who are still among the living, and if living depends on eating and the nearby dead human represents the only remaining food source in the visible vicinity, well... so be it.
And personally, as a human, while it's cool and all that we have such awesome standards for the treatment of our dead, I have no objections to my body being consumed by starving humans.
Just don't kill me for my flesh, that's all I ask. I'd want to remain alive just as much as you. Unless I'm already dying, then I'd surrender this bag of bones and nourishment.
That's a big no-no. Slaughtering our own is not the way to go to live, we have to remain above that. We already fail at that routinely as a species, but it's - hopefully - rarely driven by the urge to then eat them.
I respectfully disagree with the desire to respect the dead if eating the dead is the only way to avoid joining the dead.
