Would you drive one of these?

1995 Crown Vic Police Interceptor
Not that one in particular though.....

Anyway to the point....Last week my son got in a wreck and needs a new car.
He is 17, a junior in highschool and only works 2 days a week so funds are limited. (I bought his first car, but he wrecked it so this one is on him.)

He decided he wanted a Crown Vic cause they last frigin forever....300,000 miles not uncommon on those motors. Plenty of V8 power also. I have always been a Ford guy so that's probably where he gets it from. Of course I think it is a good choice.

Now to the real problem...his mother (my ex)
She can't stand the thought of him driving a car that might have been used as a Police vehicle.
My son says she thinks that only losers drive them......

My biggest concern is not the fact that it's an interceptor, but that it has been well maintained.
I am going to test drive it tommorrow while my son is at work. I need to make sure that the transmission is in good shape. (Probably about a $1500 repair if it isn't) The engine runs smoother than anything I have ever owned.

Main reason I am posting this here is I am 43yrs old and probably look at things a little differently than some of you guys....

just get him a used ford focus. that thing is too big for a teen.

but if it's me... of course i'd drive that car. i don't even have a car, and i commute 4 hours to and from work every day, and having a car pretty much cuts that time in half.

and i am 22

I would would have driven it when I was that age. But then again I had a chevelle and never got in on the rice-rocket craze

You should see the Mazda Protoge that he wrecked with.... 😱 His car that he wrecked was the larger 1991 Vic.
I am not completely convinced that it won't happen again.

if this one is on him then he should be allowed to pick whatever car he wants.

that is what his mother told him....
Then she starts in on me....after all it's all my fault that he wants one....

I say buy it, tint it, and have fun making people slam on the brakes

My thoughts exactly......
A mechanic friend of mine was running me to the parts store one day in his and I was crackin up watching all the brake lights.... 😀

That means it is the perfect car for him. Give him the opportunity to learn that you don't always get to buy the item you want and will have to settle for what is affordable.

Being rather young (30), I work with a lot of early 20's kids that got anything they want and now they are accustomed to that and expect the world to bow at their feet in the workplace (I.e. throw a hissy fit because they are not making 50K a year 2 years out of college).

I say go for it, big, safe and probably low insurance.

I would like a white one if for no other reason than to watch everyone think I'm a cop and slow down 😀

Too big for an inexperienced driver. He may cream somebody.

Edit: Whoa, that's actually near me. I've been saying that I was going to get one since I was 12.

It seems most of here think quite alike!
When I gave him his first car I had to hound him to get off his butt and change the oil!
He didn't really start taking proper care of it until he had been working a little while. (A stipulation for receiving it)

I am now trying to help him sell his old car. The car is worthless but it has a 5.0L that would make a Mustanger pretty happy!

I'd drive it, but for a teen driver? Not a good idea, too much power, too big, and too fast. Get him a gutless econobox that gets good mileage and is reliable.

Also, those ex-cop cars have had the CRAP beaten out of them.

Now this is a dilema.....is there such a thing for <$3000?

Now before you say go and buy a Civic I have to say that my wife had a Toyota Celica that soured me on EVER purchasing another import. When things started needing repair the cost of replacement parts was ridiculous! Usually had to go and exchange because every parts store around would give me an incorrect part the first time. (except for the dealer of course) Then to work on it you needed to be a dwarf of have toothpic arms and hands cause things were pack in so tight. Another friend of mine that used to work at a Toyota dealership had a bunch of special tools that made things easier though. (ever heard of rocker sockets? neither had I)
