I do think GW needs to go though.

I have to agree with CVSIN to a limited point. I would fight for my country to save it from oppression of others, communism, facism, a hostile take over from another country, and so on. I would to keep our liberties and our freedoms, but unfortunately within our very own country we have slowly violated our very fundamental rights to liberty and personal privacy. and I quote "Our forefathers and founders of the United States hoped to create a society of free people with freedoms without interference of government. As Thomas Jefferson stated in his first Inaugural Address: ?A Wise and Frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement.? Our country has mixed religious morals and religion all too often with the making of laws that become a direct violation of our basic free rights". Our country is too quick to make laws that restrain its people to a basic "house arrest" so to speak telling us its for our own good. I'm sorry but the whole political correctness has gone to far, and we are so focused on embracing our diversities within this country instead focusing on our commonalities that we are breaking our own country down from within. I will always question any war we propose and look at it with close scrutiny. I am not one to rush in and die for my country without knowing exactly what the reasons are behind it.

I would not die for a war that is designed to invade another country for the sole purposes of protecting oil, gas, or material possession because our country stood to gain from it. I would not die for a war where we invaded a country an imposed our will and morals and beliefs on another country who for the most part was harming no one, and had their own peaceful existence.

I agree. But I vote either way. I don't agree with the partisan politics. Both sides have some good points, but they are so polar they can't agree on anything and thus, nothing gets unless you are a lobbyist.

In response to the Marine recruiter thread, im curious to see how many people have the attitude that their country is greater than their own life.

I for one would not die for my country. I believe my life is more important than my country, to me.

Think about it this way ----

say you were born in a different country, and that country was on the opposing side of a war than the country you live in now....
If you say you would die for your country, its a little bit baseless because all that matters is where you were born.

Now, if you say you would die for your country because you believe in what your country stands for, then imo thats something different --
thats fighting for your beliefs, and I would die for what I believe in. But, If I do not agree with the what my country is fighting for, then why die
for it, just because you were born there?

Do you value all the opportunities, freedoms, and privileges your country grants you?

If so, and you wouldn't die for your country, you're simply a free-loader. I'm not saying you should go and enlist as a result of this, but if there was a draft, I don't see how you could justify dodging.

Those 2 things don't go hand in hand as easily as you'd make them out to.

Nope, it;s cut & dried as i see it.

the poll result is pathetic.

i'd imagine it's mainly spotty little nerds who care about nothing except their computer & wang.

It is not really cut and dry. While the "laws/values" of the nation may stated it values personal choices and all for the "greater good". The ruling party/government might be corrupt/evil as you can get. Are you telling me you will lay down your live for that evil & corrupt government without question?

I served 10 years US Navy
I was off Bosnia for 6 months..

I also served onboard JFK with VA-72 during the Gulf War..
the difference is I believed in the leaders at the time.. they were portecting OUR civil liberties and our rights..

toays government cares less about our rights..
they take them away every day.. sneaking bills through the houses digused in other bills.. in order to sneak them thorugh..
the patriot act designed to take our rights away to so called protect our country and homeland security.. all the while breaching peoples privacy...

Voting for GW is the worst mistake Ive ever made.. he has absolutly turned our government into his own personal relgious hammer of god...
he wants to take our rights... he wants to take away our rights to adult entertainment..
he wants to take away our privacy in our own homes or jobs..

guess GW and Congress wipe thier asses with the constitution and the declaration of indendance..

becasue they sure as hell havenmt read and understand them..

Would I risk my life to protect others and the ideals of my country? Yes.

Would I selflessly give it up my life for purposes related to the military or political advancedment of my country? Most likely not.

Nobody ever won a war by dying for his country. He made the other poor SOB die for his. /Patton

Thank you.

't'is a great quote, but it leaves out a good fact brought up earlier in this thread.
i shall be going into ROTC in what will likely be the Army, and will try to become a Military Intelligence Officer. If I ever had information that I could not let anyone else know, for anything, even soldiers under my command couldn't know it... i wouldn't hand my life over, but if the situation called for it and no help was coming for me, I wouldn't throw my life away. What I would do however, would be to throw myself at the enemy, gun, knife, fists flying, in an attempt to escape. At this point, I can say I would take anything and never give up hope of escape or rescue, but nobody can ever know how much they could take before they either A) gave in, or B) take their own life. I'd hope I'd be strong enough to do niether, as I refuse to take the cowards way out. But, I can say that if necessary I'd be able to give up my life by some means, before ever letting out classified information that needed to be kept secret.

I would die defending my home and family, even my community, but I would not go off and fight some war.

I would do my part to fight for my country if need be but at this point I'm probably not the first in line to be picked for a draft or anything like that.

I would never join the military, not even during a draft. That's fighting a beauraucrat's war. I would defend my country Red Dawn style, though that requires someone actually attacking this country.

And yet we still failed. How about Somalia? You would have joined to fight in both of those?

I would absolutely NOT EVER CONSIDER risking my life for my country. The way things have been lately I'm almost ashamed to even admit I live here. This country NEEDS its ass kicked; maybe it will dislodge our head from up there. I'm sure there's plenty of impressionable young men who will fight the wars of old men without question, but I certainly am not one of them. I will die to protect my family and friends from grave, immediate danger but not for some war that has nothing to do directly with my immediate life. Selfish? Hell yeah. Do I care? Absolutely not.

It just depends on the circumstances. Too many variables.

Did you honestly believe things could be as simple as "yes" or "no". Surely you would have to explain the exact conditions before such a question could be answered.

Some people say-I've heard talk-that married men should not go (to war). Because of their families. But this involves contradiction, a fatal one. The family man dare not hang back and expect the bachelor to do his fighting for him. It is manifestly unfair for me to expect a bachelor to die for my children if I am unwilling to die for them myself. Enough of that attitude on the part of married men and the bachelor will refuse to fight if the married man stays safe at home...and the republic is doomed. The barbarian will walk in unopposed.
