Saul,

If he paid $1,500 at Helzbergs, you can probably get a similar diamond new for not much more from Blue Nile. That's where I got my fiance's ring. Helzberg's and the other mall stores are over-priced. If you want local, go to Briman's...

Brimans is expensive too. Where is Blue nile at?

Diamonds have NO resale value at all, it sucks. He is lucky to be getting 600. Took a 9,000 ring to a pawn shop just for craps and giggles and they offered $1,000...

Dood, you are seriously asking for an ass WHOOOPING sometime later in life. When, not if, but when she finds out that ring is from a friend's failed marriage she is gonna go Lorena Bobbitt on you. If she is a reasonable gal who loves you, she will rather have whatever ring you can afford and will cherish it. Try to find something in your budget that is a little unique, or have something unique made. Of course, if she's a money grubbing materialistic ho-bag, go ahead and buy your friends ring, she'll love it.

The reason your bud is taking the $900 hit is because used engagement/wedding rings are basically valueless.
If your woman finds out she'll pitch a fit and you'll end up stuck with a $600 ring you can't turn over, a headache from her bitching, and a big bill for a new ring.
Bite the bullet here and put the $600 towards the $2-3,000 ring she wants (or deserves, for that matter).

It's a painfully shytty investment, but it's part of getting married.
Diamonds are to women what the epenis is to geeks.

I bought a ring and then broke of the engagement. Then a year later I gave the ring to the new girl. No problem, I'd buy it in a second.

Only used rings worth it are antiques. An irish crown for instance. Make sure she wears it on her right hand, crown turned outwards.

I would seriously consult your girl first. Possibly in a joking manner (joke about buying a ring on ebay or something like that) and see the reaction because if you did it behind her back and she EVER found out. Well, I'd be willing to bet there would be a lot of cold nights spent after that discovery.

I don't think anyone goes to a pawn shop to get a good deal on a resale first off...

Lol yes diamonds are valueless once sold as a ring. Come on people, it's made of gold and diamonds they don't depricate. You only get screwed on the upfront cost. Which sadly is why you *never* pay retail for jewelery.

The ring will never be valued less than the weight of the gold and diamonds in value.

The rest of the people talking about how classy it is, are ridiculous. It's a ring for cripes sake. Even if you think you are getting a retail ring first hand, you are not. The stones are mined, sold to a diamond merchant. The diamond merchant then sells the stones to retailers. The retailers may sell the stones to another retailer or fit the stones into a ring.

After that little chain of events, you are not the first owner of the stones so why would you pay full price for them anyways?

Take it from a guy who spent about 4000 bucks on the "upgrade" ring in retail, only to find how much it was marked up later. The jewelers are there to make money, make no mistake about that. Granted the ring I bought my wife is nice, but it still sucks thinking about how much I overpaid for no reason. I could have gotten a nicer stone, a better jeweled band, or just saved some money. God forbid a man doesn't spend ever last dime he has on a ring for his wife...

Even if it's appraised at $1500 it won't matter either.

Check the price on an equivalent diamond at bluenile.com. Might be hard, because the guy probably doesn't even know the specs.

Is the setting platinum or gold?

I know a tiny bit about diamonds and if your friend tried to pawn that ring he'd be lucky to get $100 for the ring.

If you want a really good deal on a diamond ring you don't go to Helzburg or Zales. 😉
