Would you consider this tacky?

My friend is recently divorced, and he has a wedding ring he said he would sell me for $600. He paid $1500 from Helzberg diamonds (a reputable store), he still has the receipt, and its still under warranty. Would you do that?

As long as you are not superstitious! And the wife doesn't find out. Besides you could get a nice Cubic Zirconium for $100

jewelry depreciates just like cars, but rather than it being a curve, it's almost instant. Reflects just how much it's really overpriced to begin with

If your girl is ok with it, go for it. If you think she'd object and the stone is worth more than that, buy it and have the stone remounted in a new setting and sell the ring if the metal's worth anything.

Do a new setting if it's worn. A lot of diamonds are not brand new.

As long as the diamond was not intended for someone else by you, it's fair game.

Check out diamondtalk.com first though.

Many women would not object to getting a nicer ring second hand that their fiances could not afford otherwise. If he's only got $600 to spend, only he and his fiancee-to-be will know if she'd like a new $600 ring better than a gently used $1500 ring. Who knows, maybe she'd get mad if he spent more than a few hundred dollars for the ring. Plenty of women are like that, myself included.

Saul,

If he paid $1,500 at Helzbergs, you can probably get a similar diamond new for not much more from Blue Nile. That's where I got my fiance's ring. Helzberg's and the other mall stores are over-priced. If you want local, go to Briman's...

Depends on if your fiance is the type to take offense to that. Some girls are really cool about that kind of stuff. Otherwise, go for it.
