Would you consider this a good condition CPU?

Not going to post the person's name on this just yet but I had a lengthy conversasion with the guy. I ended up buying a CPU from him after asking how good a condition it was in. He said it works. Well I get it in and I don't even want to try to install it to see if it works. I'm appalled at the condition at which it was in. Going to send it back but I'll let you guys have a gander at it. Took soom pictures as soon as I opened the packaging.

Also, there are no chips or flakes anywhere inside the packaging to indicate this happened in transit. It was sent this way or I'd see pieces of that CPU inside this plastic box he put it in.

hmm.. maybe those pictures just aren't very clear, but I don't see anything wrong with it..

it's obviously used, and he has removed the little processor feet, but otherwise, looks fine.

I'm not sure what you were expecting?

If it works, i don't think you have anything to be upset about..

what is that and how much did you get that for? if it only costs u a bit more, then send that back to him and get a retail or xp-m.

otherwise...leave him bad heatware

It definately looks like there's some some chipped pieces on the core. Probably from mounting a heatsink backwards? It doesn't surprise me that it would still work, but most people who have chipped cores say the chips run hotter after they are damaged like this.

It's an XP 1800+ CPU. I got it cheap but I still expect my CPUs to be free from chipped cores when I buy them even used. That's actual physical damage to the core, and when I asked about the condition of the CPU I should have been told about the damage. Saying it is in good condition means everything is undamaged. Sure it "may" work right, like a 3 legged dog "can" still walk, but when I buy something I like to be told up front what I'm getting and not lied to.

If I wanted a 3 legged dog I would have asked for one. Instead I asked for a 4 legged dog and got a 3 legged one. Heck, since I haven't tested the CPU it could be a dog without legs completely (not running at all). Sorry for the analogy but that's what I got. Chips like this take off tousands of transistors. They aren't made with "buffer" silicon on top for damage. You take a piece off the core and it's now damaged. A damaged CPU will never work like it used to, if it even does work at all.

If you paid under $10 shipped for it then I would not sweat it...maybe even $20 but its not worth more than that. Of course if it dont work then its worthless.

That processor looks pretty bad. I've seen some chipped cores in my day, and none of them that numerous. In fact, I once chipped a very small portion of an old Duron's core and afterwards it was completely dead. Send it back. There's no excuse for such rough handling and blatant disregard for the health of computer parts.

Ditto. Plus, that doesn't look like anti-static foam to me. Just the opposite, in fact, it looks like the stuff that they make el-cheapo summertime disposable coolers out of, and that is pro-static if anything. I would personally send it back on that alone.

Oh yeah, I've also seen chipped AMD cores that didn't even look that bad, and the CPUs were dead.

A friend of mine accidentially chipped his AXP core, didn't look all too different from your chip, though its been a while. Anyway he had a solid overclock going, maybe 20-25%, I forget. He changed coolers, chipped the core in the process and the core continued to work at stock speeds, but not a tick higher. It may work, but the heat/stability issues could also be very real.

It's not in "good condition", but if it works, then that's all I'd really care about. Those things are never that pretty anyway.

I think if you plugged it in it would either die frequently, or work fine. That looks like high level surface damage, though my monitor sucks and I can't see very well the pics...
