Would you consider insuring your own safety and survival...

Let's say there are a burning building, and you know someone is inside. Would you risk your safety and possibly your life to go into that building and save that person, knowing that person might be dead already, knowing you might die?
Why?
If you chose not to, could you live with yourself?

Why do you think we as humans feel that if we can help, we should?
Is it all we have, all that sets us apart?

It's all about odds and perceptions. If it looked like I could make it in and out, and looked like I could help I would. That's how I was raised, I'm hardwired that way.

How big is the building? How big is the fire? Do you know the person inside? Do you know where in the building the person is?

i don't know what i would do unless it actually happened. i like to think i would help but if i didn't i know i'd be able to live with it because i am also responsible for the well-being of my wife and 2 girls.

if it were one of them in the building i would no doubt run through fire to save them.

Sometimes it comes down to simplicity. There is a chance you will burn to death or die through smoke inhalation trying to save someone else.
Is their life worth yours?
Why?

I don't mean to compare lives.
Your wife or kids are not equal to some stranger, but, I don't see the gray area here. If you would risk your life to save the life of one person, you will risk your life to save the life of another.

i disagree. i would risk my life to save any member of my family. i would not risk my life to save certain deposed tyrants and dictators.

I know someone who did something like this.

He woke up one day and saw flames everywhere. He went around looking for people in need, and he found a woman curled up in a corner. When he got to her side, the flames and smoke had enclosed them and they had nowhere to go, so the guy covered the woman with his body until firefighters arrived. He suffered something like 3rd degree burns over 95% of his body but the woman was fine.

I'd go in to save a woman or a child - if it's just some bloke he can burn, who cares.

I might place my life in moderate risk to assist someone I didn't know, if I felt confident I could make a difference. But I don't think I would dash into a situation where it seemed like everyone, including myself, would die. But it could depend on my mood at that moment in time. Somedays I might be more inclined to want to save a cat or dog, than a human being.

edit: Knowing the person would make a huge difference. It's a completely different situation with family members or loved ones.

The guy and maybe his family and friends.

If he's got life insurance his family will be ok. Besides, a guy should be able to save himself, what am I going to do that he can't already do? I guess if he was trapped or unconcious or something and I figured there was a good chance I could actually get him out...

Then why save the woman? She should also be able to get herself out.
Life is life. Man, woman or child.

Then why are only men allowed to be front-line soldiers? Why is it 'women and children first' off the sinking ship or whatever? IMO some lives are definitely worth more than others.

This guy clearly thinks so too - not that I'm comparing myself to him. I might be a complete coward in a situation like that, who knows, but I know what I'd like to think I would do.

"People," not "women and children in need" and "ignored the men."
I think that guy would have saved anyone.
Sounds like a hero to me.

I'm afraid I would have to weigh people's lives differently, with the most weight given to my children, and then to my wife. Further, I am more likely to try to save a child's life before an adult's, regardless of whether I knew them or not. Beyond that, I am more likely to try to save close family and friends than someone I don't know.

If its a family member or friend... hell yes. A child and I think I can save them..... yeah. If its a total stranger (man or woman, don't care) only if its minimal risk. If it looks like I could be killed sorry.

WTF is this thread about ? Are you talking about some sort of weird life/damage insurance policy in case you decide to play hero?
