no I wouldn't. Unless you are getting paid very well to do so. You have to realize that's a good chunk of time from your life that you won't get back each day. It makes an 8 hour day become a 10.5 hour day (assuming combo of highway and city miles) or more

240 miles round trip? I would definately relocate. If it's 60 miles each way then I would commute...if I had a decent car that gets good gas milage and has a good sound system.

Back when I was a Carpenter living in the Bay Area I use to commute 60 miles to and from work on many occasions. Of course the pay was great and many times I would share rides and the cost of gas with co-workers. 120 miles round trip was about the limit though.

My company moved 121 miles away so I commuted for about one month. I relocated after I woke up one morning and saw that my car was going at a concrete structure at 80 mph. I straighten it out and woke up again and saw that my car was going at the guard rail at 80. I got it on to the shoulder and slept for 10 minutes which was enough to get me to work without falling asleep again.

I follow the 15 minute rule,in order to live in a new place it's gotta be close enough that I can get from the shower to my cube via car in 15 minutes:)

That's exactly what I do, 60 miles each way, but NYC traffic is INSANE so it can take me 2 hours or more sometimes. Recently installed a kickass sound system. :)

At the going rate for the cost of driving of $.35/mi. you're stuck paying $84 to go to work for one day.

That $.35 figure includes gas, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation.

You better make a lot of money at this job.

I work with a guy that lives in Madison WI, and works in suburban Chicago (~100-120 miles or so)

He end up making the trip once or twice a week and staying over at a friend's house near Chicago the rest of the time.

He sets aside 2.5 - three hours in the morning to cover unpredictable traffic / construction (and is still occasionally late).

(Girlfriend / shack-up lives in Madison, can't find a job making the same (adjusted) money in Madison ... too much cheap student labor).

I live 45 miles from work but the commute is much longer.

I get up at 5:30 and leave the house at 6:40 am with my wife, drop the kids off at daycare, drop her off at work, and arrive at my work around 8:10-8:20 depending on traffic.

6 month stint as a contractor from Indianapolis -> columbus OH.

Arranged to work 10 hr days plus addtional work on Friday/weekend at home is I chose.

Worse part was the 1/2 hr driving into the sun in the AM.

In the US? Heck no! Only if we had a high speed rail system like they do in Europe, where is not uncommon that people commute hundreds of kilometers to and from work a day.

Nope. I drive 73 miles to work each way and that's the limit for me.

Let's put it this way: I"d not drive more than an hour each way, miles aside, although I'd rather drive 50 miles in an hour than 15 in an hour, because the latter is just frustrating and painful. 120 miles EACH way not a chance.

120 miles ?! That calls for relocation. 2-3 hours of travel time each way each day is not worth any amount of money.
