Would you choose FIOS or CABLE given the following scenario........

So here's how I've broken down trying to decide which to go with.......(aka, whether to stick w/ cable or not)...........

Cable:

1.) Analog cable gives me 99% of the channels I care about and I don't need a set top box for any TV in my house........(at least not 'til 2009??)

2.) Still under $100 (I think it's $96 right now) for TV + HSI (4m down and 384k up)

3.) Pretty reliable uptime and considering I use Sunrocket for telephone, that's important.

FIOS:

1.) Analog FIOS gives about 50% of the channels I care about (none of the upper channels like cable has, like TLC, TNT, TBS, USA, etc.) This means I'd have to go to using FIOS set top boxes.

2.) Analog *would* have been much cheaper (VZ has a $12.95 plan for analog TV), except their analog TV has very few channels that anybody's used to. (i.e. their upper channels are not the upper channels you're used to on cable, so you're basically just gettin' the network channels like 1 thru 13.)

3.) FIOS "internet" does give a higher upload rate and one Mb higher download rate (5M/2M for FIOS vs. 4M/384K for cable) but I don't know if that's worth shakin' up my current setup for.

And once you consider that I'd have to pay for FIOS's digital cable, the $12.95 price goes right up to $39.99 which is about what I pay for cable. Plus, I get a discount for cable TV + internet.......(1st service is $39.99 & each additional service knocks off $5, so in essence internet is $34.95).

Knowing all that (and unless I'm missing something like VZ givin' away up to 4 free STB's to entice people), is it me, or does it seem like a better idea to stay w/ cable.........at least until analog cable is gone.

???????

CLIFFS -------------> Both cost $100/month (give or take a few bucks)

FIOS ---has a *little* more internet speed, but requires STB's for every TV in the house

CABLE ---has less internet speed, but doesn't require any STB's at all and gives me most of what I want.

I don't believe you will need a set top box in your house after 2009, unless your cable company gets rid of analog cable. The switch to all digital is for broadcast only. Nothing stopping your cable company from continuing to offer analog cable.

A couple of VERY good questions...........so I'll put "Cliffs" in the OP right now to simplify...........(I know *I* appreciate Cliffs in other folk's posts)........

FiOS + DirecTV HD for teh win! I know some FiOS markets were giving package discounts on DirecTV when you got fiber hooked up--this was before FiOS TV though. I'd check in your local area to see if its still offered--I think it still is with Verizon DSL.

I thought the appeal of FIOS was 10mbps+ download speeds (and T1+ upload.) A lot of people would pay more for that.

in your situation, i'd just stay put for now. No need to play the FIOS game, especially since it's new.

I, on the other hand, would go FIOS. Or at least try it. Comcast was never reliable enough to switch to VOIP. I also value the upload speeds much much more.

That's what I'm thinking.

My neighbor got it because she works from home and *needs* bandwidth. (She went w/ the 15/2 package..........can you imagine 15Mbps down??? Yeowww!!!)

But I definitely don't need that. I'm strictly recreational and hardly download anything. So I'm thinkin' the same!

I think I was originally enticed by thinking I could get the same or better for the same or even a little less..........(at least that's what the VZ guy was preachin' before I caught on to what THEIR analog TV actually carries)

Run an ethernet cable from your neighbor's house?

actually, i like this.. see if you can pay a small bit of her bill, cut the HSI from cable.. save a bundle! heh

Actually, I'd have to run RJ45 coax to get TV *and* internet......(at least I think so).

But it would definitely work. Heck.......w/ analog cable you can split that TV signal about a zillion times & it still comes up as good. ;)

P.S. by "her" you mean the chick acrossed the street......which wouldn't really work........it would be funny though, eh??

add the extra $10 to get your FIOS up to 15/2 and the obvious choice will present itself.

why does he need to up to 15/2? he just said he's a casual browser. I'd be plenty happy w/ 5/2 because I have yet to see the '6' comcast claims. and they're still stuck in .3 for the upstream. (if you can't tell, i'm bitter about comcast)

Well if your main concern is budgetary then I'd stick with what you have. Personally I'd pay a bit more for the 15/2 but unlike you I'm not a casual downloader I do a lot of game demo downloading, youtube videos, etc. so having the extra bandwidth would be nice. I didn't think I'd ever become more than a casual browser myself but as more speed became available (currently paying for 6mbps but getting typically around 10-12mbps downstream) I find that I do more downloading.

Random & Freak.......

You are both right on. And as per Freak's comments..........well, heck......that's probably my biggest fear. If I jumped into doubling or tripling my bandwidth.........who knows what trouble I'd lure myself into..........:p

I think I might be best right where I am, even though it may be the least exciting option.

And FWIW, I was told by the VZ guys that they actually lease the TV feed from DirecTV. They also seemed to think that DirecTV sees the writing on the wall & want to get in bed w/ VZ now to secure a long future for themselves in TV in case satellite fades).

Thought I'd update this thread & explain what *I* did & how my FIOS neighbors are makin' out..........

*I* ended up sticking w/ cable. Hooked up on a Time Warner package as I was actually paying a few bucks more for less stuff. Now I have the latest (Moto 6416) DVR which is totally awesome (slaughter's old Moxy) and leavin' the rest of the TV's in the house analog.

Upgraded from 3mbps/256kbps to 4/512 and soon will be 6/512. (Plenty of bandwidth)

FWIW, neighbor acrossed the street w/ FIOS is testing anywhere from 4-6mbps and about 1,7xx on her upload. (Upload's fine.......download is SEVERELY lacking).

And I was hounded plenty on bbr.com about not jumping to FIOS. Still waiting for her feedback from Verizon as to why her 15/2 service is not even 1/2 of the d/l she should be getting.
