Would you challenge a great sports athlete if they were 65

I was reading about the upcoming Tyson fight this morning and it got me thinking. Would I be willing to challenge him if he was 65 yrs. old and I was in my prime? Similarly, would I challenge Michael Jordan to a one-on-one game of basketball, or race Lance Armstrong or bat against Randy Johnson if they were 65 years old.

On the one hand, it'd be awesome to say "I beat Mike Tyson" even if he was just some old crazy guy at the time. However, it'd also be utterly embarrasing to get my ass kicked by a senior citizen.

Depends on the sport, but for most I'd say 'yes'.

No way in hell would I challenge a 65 year old ex great boxer in most cases. They'd still beat my ass hard.

Depends on if they let themselves go or stayed in shape, and how bad I sucked at their profession.

I doubt I could beat them even in my prime when they were old. Unless their legs had been blown off in a horrible accident or something.

That's what those fantasy baseball camps are for. As well as the events where a bunch of people get on the racetrack with current/former greats.

I agree with DougK62, I wouldn't try boxing or a sport where I could get hurt bad, even if the guy was 65.
But playing basketball with MJ or taking shots on Hasek would be safe and really fun. Getting an 80mph fastball in the head from a 65 year old Randy Johnson would NOT be fun. 🙂

Only if I was sure they were still good enough to beat me.

What would I have to gain from kicking the ass of someone who was once great? It certainly wouldn't give me a feeling of satisfaction.

Yeah, this is pretty much assuming that they kept in shape, but they haven't practiced their sport much in the last 15 to 20 years.

I'm pretty sure I could get a hit off a wheelchair-bound Roger Clemens.... Now if he had full use of his body, he'd probably still be able to strike me out with a 75 MPH fastball.

I think being able to say I beat Michael Jordan one-on-one, assuming you're decent at playing basketball to begin with, is still some sort of bragging rights. I mean, it's virtually a given that Jordan at his current age would beat 99.9% of the people on AT in a one-on-one match right now. He'd still likely beat over 80% of the people here at age 65, I'd think.

Betcha Sandy Koufax can still strike out Barry Bonds. 😛

At this point Barry would be so shocked to see a pitch in the strike zone he'd probably have a heart attack.

With the exception of sports where I might get killed, I would gladly challenge any famous athlete regardless of their age. Sure, I'd get my ass handed to me, but at least I could say that I went one-on-one with Jordan, for example.

do you guys realize how old 65 is? most people use to die before they were 60. so logically you would be fighting someone who should really be dead. 😉

Yes.

If you guys have been around people that are 65yrs, and they have trained all their lives and have continued to so up to that age. You would know that they have LOST A LOT of speed, stamina, strength, etc.

It wouldn't be so hard to beat most athletes that are 65yrs old imo if you are at your prime. But if they were 45-50 and you were in your prime that would be MUCH better challenge. And I'd be more often then not the'd beat you when they are 45.

yeah a 65 year old boxer will still murder most people. A 65 year old sprinter might be something different.
