Where I work it is painfully obvious who is competent (or not), who is pulling their weight (or not) or if a person is even trying at all. Management knows what to expect from each of us. Unfortunately, the system does not alow them to do anything about it ...

FUCK NO.

How the fuck do you dictate if they are pulling their weight for work that YOU don't even do? How do you know how hard the work is? How do you know how many projects they are doing at once? How do you know if they are feeling good?

All the time. However, it will have little effect in a corporate environment and may get supervisors involved which will only cause you trouble.

So, how many of the "don't care if it doesn't affect me" crowd view their job as simply a means to a paycheck?

its like this, if the boss will back you up and its your responsibility to get production then yeah. if not you end up being the bad guy .... but if you chill out like that person does also = just remember that.

That's pretty much me. I give companies as much loyalty as is returned, which usually isn't much. It isn't my job to be a corporate rat, but if the company has EARNED my loyalty, and I see an employee's actions /seriously/ affecting the company, I'll say something.

I guess it's all about perspective. I chose my field knowing I would never get rich. Years later, I learned that doing it for corporations was a poor match because the goals were different. Now, I work on my own terms. I work to my own standards and I regularly berate those who are unwilling to learn better skills or, are lacking in knowledge required to do their jobs or, spend their day looking for the "easy" button. I have little tolerance for those who just want to go along with the flow and not make waves.

Maybe I misunderstood the question. I read it as going to someone "above" to complain. I have no issues giving individuals shit for being lamers :^D

Unless you're the business owner, what else is a job EXCEPT a means to a paycheck?
If they stopped paying you...would you keep going to work?

If it doesn't affect me it doesn't effect me plain and simple.

It's their bosses job to manage not yours. Now if I was working with them and had to carry them damn right I would. Not to mention the fact if it doesn't affect me, how do I know they're not actually carrying their own weight.

Hell somebody can look like their doing anything for 3/4 of the day, but that's simply because their actually good at what they do and get their shit done in a 1/4 of the time it takes all the slackers.

That was very common in my unit. It would literally take me maybe 30 minutes to do something the 1SG/NCOIC told me to do while everybody else would cake that same job out till lunch if not all day.

Perhaps I interpreted things differently. I tend to treat coworkers and supervisors exactly the same. I guess that's why I'm not a "team player." :D

That's all a job is. With a few exceptions, the whole notion of a "career" is laughable IMO. I'm a white collar professional and I only work because I need a paycheck, not because I think it somehow fulfills some hidden desire of mine and makes me a more complete person. As I mentioned in the other thread about the guy who quit his job recently, if I won the lottery or somehow suddenly acquired all of the financial security I'd ever need, I couldn't quit my job fast enough.

To the OP: No, it isn't really any of your business.

A paycheck is not the top priority as I've already said. I value my personal growth and the contribution to the community including my coworkers, customers and, travelers more. I cannot fathom those folks who are apparently willing to spend hours and hours doing something they hate for people they hate just so they can enjoy a few hours on the weekend or retire when they're 40 so they can "begin" living. As I said, it's about perspective.

In the corporate workplace, no.

On Survivor island, possibly to draw attention away from myself hopefully.

I hate my job sometimes, but not usually. I also don't hate the people I work for. What are you talking about?

I believe he is talking about someone like me. In general, I really don't care for what I do and I really dislike our new management. Unfortunately I'm stuck for a few months at a minimum until I figure something else out.

I know the voices in your head are loud but, we can't hear them. You haven't weighed in to the OP's question so, I have no idea what your point of reference is.
