Would you buy an old school jetta (80's?) for $100?

Would you buy a 5-speed late-80's jetta for $100 (which breaks down frequently), if only for a few days fun before dumping it?

That's my current situation :)

depends on whether it would be used on public roads or not. if I had a giant backyard where I could torture it and then blow it up, hell yeah. but since buying it and driving on public roads would entail all the taxes, registrations, liscenses.....no way.

I guess I could always rent a car, but I don't think they rent out 5-speeds anywhere in NJ..looking to mess around with it since i'm too cheap to wear out my own clutch :)

Why, you want one ?

My old 1985 VW Jetta GL is about to be given to the volunteers of america.... was my dad's, then mine... now, it's still running, but a ticking timebomb as far as repairs.

I'll sell you an old school civic (80s) for $100. It's never broken down on me, but the AC sucks, it burns oil, and the front axles make clicking noises.

Only time it ever left anyone stranded was because of a flat tire.

Yeah right. If you're under 25, you pay up the nose. It would probably be the same price, but the $100 will last more than a day...

hopefully :p

As for insurance, well, i'm 23, and pay about $2.6k/year insurance on my '03 civic lx coupe -- and I pay $2.9k/year for the car (i'm financing). Gotta love living in NJ.

*EDIT* oh yeah, and i've got no points, never been stopped (yet)...I couldn't imagine how much it would go up if I actually got a ticket.

Damn 100$? You can fix that thing up and sell it for 2.5-3K you know. How bad of shape is it in?

Geico doesn't offer insurance in NJ, nor progressive. The state is to expensive for them.

I have had GEICO insurance forever and I like them, but I don't think they offer auto insurance in NJ.

I have no idea what's wrong with it, as I haven't had a chance to even talk to anybody there..I don't think the car's going anywhere soon, so I'll go check it out soon ;)

Too bad about Geico :( .. the only time I tried insurance shopping was where I filled out all my info at www.insurecom.com because I was getting my hands on a low mileage '93 civic ex coupe for a really good price (~$3k), but nobody ended up contacting me in two weeks. Cheapest insurance for me with my company would end up being about $1600, and soon enough insurance will cost me more than the price of the car, so I passed on the whole used-ca-for-daily-driver idea...

It is sad, I pay more for my car insurance($350) a month then the car payment ($256). Only in Jersey.
