Would you buy an emachines laptop?

Found a really decent price on an emachines laptop. Read a couple reviews and the laptop seems to be the best value on the market. However, you get what you pay for and I don't want this thing to die a couple months after the warranty ends.

Anyone have any experience with them? What do you think?

Depends on the deal. My brother has had an emachines desktop for the last two years now and had ZERO trouble.

My mom's had an E-machine for the past 3 years... only problem was a hard drive malfunction last year, but we got it replaced without any hassle. It's pretty good for the money, I would say.

bought my aunt an EM desktop and its been fine but, since you can get other reputable laptops for cheap, thesre really no point in getting the EM with the bad stigma

Look in the sunday paper and get the $699 Dell instead, or watch Hot Deals. I might buy a disposable emachines laptop for $499 instead if it had a 3-year warranty, otherwise I'd get the Dell.

For that matter, nab something out of FS/T too. I think PAB was selling some Dell laptops, although those were probably higher end ones.

Is the widescreen critical? The paper here has had Compaq, HP, Toshiba for $850-$1050 with 2 GHz and CDRW/DVD, just with a normal 15" display.

Dude, Emachines used to suck big time.. but they don't anymore... they're no worse or better than any other brand.

<- our office ended up getting a few new emachines.I opened them up, and saw *gasp* a real atx powersupply... lol

widescreen is fun. I know it's still rather new and you pay a premium for it but it looks very useful.

I have an emachines desktop, and it runs better than my friends Dell. In the end, it comes down to the user. If you dont mess it up then it will be fine. If you install all kinds of garbage on there it will crap out on you, just like any other computer. I know. My parents call me almost daily to help fix their p4 2.4 512 ram Dell. My p3 500 emachines runs perfectly 24x7.

My wife's emachines Celeron 366 is still running great. Got it for free after a 3 year deal with Prodigy internet service. I've since upgraded the memory and harddrive, but the thing runs like a champ. Often it's the few people who've had a negative experience that make the most noise. And since we all love to see a good rant, you come back with a negative opinion of the company based off a couple bad experiences some people have had.
I say go for it. Can't be any worse than anything else out there. If it has a warranty, you should be ok.
