Would you buy a used Tempurpedic mattress? (9 months old)

My fiance and I are in the market for a new bed and frame, and took a look at the Costco Sealy Queen Posturpedic mattresses ($429 after $100 off coupon). They're nice, and we were thinking about a $300 bedframe from IKEA. Total price of both will be at least $900, including tax and shipping costs.

I was browsing through craigslist and found a couple selling their 9-month old Tempurpedic queen-sized mattress and IKEA frame (the same one we were going to buy) for $1300. I just got off the phone with the owner (negotiated down to $1100), and was wondering if you would:

a) Buy the new mattress and new frame for $850 total, shipped, or

b) Buy the 9-month used Tempurpedic mattress (new about $2000) and IKEA frame for $1100 ($1120 shipped, I have a friend with a truck who only charges $20/move).

(edit: just got a promotion, raise, and christmas bonus... my fiance and I just moved into our new place, and would like to treat ourselves to nice new bedding)

I'd go with the sealy costco. I'd just feel weird sleeping on a used mattress.

Yeah, I know it's weird and I've never bought a used mattress before but the people selling it are a nice husband/wife couple so I figure it can't be TOO bad... plus no stains, odors, rips, etc. :p

if they are "Nice Couple" then they wud have definitely done it on the bed... well now if they weren't nice I would have thought twice abt buying a used car from them but would have bought the bed :p

i've sold mattresses, but then they were to students so they weren't that discerning.

i'd still get the new one from costco though. only thing i'd consider buying used is the frame. bf has allergies and i have no idea what's in that used mattress.

there used to be this huge memory foam thread in the hot deals section. im not sure if i read it there or on FW ... but i recall reading something about the foam not being as good (too soft, hard or it wouldnt hold its shape? i cant recall which) and how temperpedic wouldn't fulfill their lifetime warranty because it didnt meet some threshold of poor quality. i have a pretty horrible memory but it is a consideration and you might want to do some research on that.

What, so just b/c they are a "nice husband/wife couple" they've never done what thousands of other similar couples have done on their own bed?

As one half of a "nice husband/wife couple," I'd be too skeeved out.

i would think a used mattress would be worth a lot less than half the new value, even if it was only a week old.

I bought a tempurpedic bed from a local "Healthy Back Store"....the people there were really nice, and were willing to negotiate with me. I got them to throw in 2 free tempurpedic pillows (awesome!), and also got free shipping / pickup of old mattress. For our queen bed it came out to be $1500. They offered me 1 year of financing at 0% interest, and I couldn't resist. Needless to say, it was the best money I've spent! My parents have the costco one, and although I haven't actually slept in it, it just isn't the same. I could tell just by laying on it.

get the Costco one and if you guys are itching to try the viscoelastic foam stuff, they make mattress toppers using it. That's what I did and now with the foam mattress topper plus a nice Serta mattress, sleeping has been great.

I'd buy a traditional mattress from Costco if you want to try the memory foam (I have it & love it) buy a topper from Overstock.com when they have a sale (get a 3" topper, the other ones bottom out).

Buying used mattresses doesn't bother me, but I'd at least try it out to see if it feels like it's worth more money. And like RossMAN pointed out, CostCo =

Get the Costco set, and buy the Memory Foam matress topper from Overstock.com. Just make sure you head over to the gottadeal.com forums for a deal on the matress topper in the Online Deals forum. :)

Thanks for all the replies, very good points. We're going to take a look at the mattress and bed at the couple's house tonight (already promised we'd stop by), but now I'm leaning towards the Costco mattress and a foam topper (great suggestion!). Thanks for the feedback!
