Would you be willing to do it?

A few days ago, a friend of mine handed me the toughest question I have ever had to answer in my life. His words were simple.

"If I were about to die, and you had every chance in the world to live, while my only choice was to die, would you be willing to trade your life for mine? Would you be willing to die for me? Would you be willing to trade places, and take my death, so that I could have your life?"

This floored me. I knew we were good friends, but the thought had never crossed my mind. After thinking about it for a bit, I said "Yes. I would. Because I know that you would be willing to do the same for me."

Now here's the question I have to ask you. If your friend was about to die, and you had the ability somehow to take his/her place and die in their place so that they could live. Would you do it? Would you do it for family alone? Or not at all?

I would, someone did it for me a long time ago, the least I could do is balance out the scales..

I've only felt that way about one person, and I had every intention of marrying her. Even though she doesn't feel the same about me now, I would still lay down my life for hers.

I would only do it for a family member. That includes people I feel so close to that I consider them my family.

There are a group of people I'd do that for,my lover,my kids or grandkids,my family, the ones closest to my heart because losing one of them would be like dying some anyway

Before I had a family...I might have said yes.
Now...no way, except for my family.

I would trade my own life for that of my wife or my kids tho.
Wouldn't even have to think about it.

This may sound totally selfish, but if there is no chance at all that we would both live, I wouldn't do it.

If there is a small chance that we could both come out of it alive, I would do it in a heartbeat (assuming family/best friend)

if it was something like someone was going to shoot my friend, i would jump in and try to push him away while risking taking the bullet. in a situation like this, its not me saying i will kill myself to save you, its more like saying you are my friend and i would do anything to keep you around even if it meant risking my live to save you.

wow that's a messed up question to ask your friends. I don't worry about that sh¡t... if it comes down to a decision sometime in my life, that's when i will decide.

Only for family. If you have a friend that is a good enough of a friend, then I would consider him family. Therefore for best friends, yes.

*Edit* Now that Ive given it more though, the only one I would do it for right now in my life is my little sister. I guess I feel I have a responsibility to protect her. I would not for my older sister because she has already made some bad choices in her life, and doesn't even act like my sister at times, she's selfish. I wouldn't do it for my parents because I KNOW they would not one me too, and would be more miserable living with me dead, then dying. For my little sister though, I would do it in an instant, without thought.

If you would die for your friend, and you friend would die for you, when the time comes, how do you decide who gets it?

I probably wouldn't be willing to do it for anyone that would actually ask it from me.

I'd like to be able to say this. I know for a few that this is true. But since I haven't been in this situation before, other than those very few, I don't know that I would be able to do it - or even want to, for that matter.
