A wrongful death lawsuit was filed in state court in Broward County, Florida, on October 10 claims that Awan was burned beyond recognition "because the Model S has inaccessible door handles, no other way to open the doors, and an unreasonably dangerous fire risk." According to the Bloomberg news service, the suit says the cause of death was smoke inhalation and that Awan did not have any internal injuries or broken bones. The man's family is reportedly seeking more than $15,000 in damages.

Wtf...$15k? I wonder if they raised their pinky to their mouth and said it in an Austin Powers voice

Tesla: "We understand that speed is being investigated as a factor in this crash, and know that high-speed collisions can result in a fire in any type of car, not just electric vehicles."
I think they should ask for more just based on the dickishness of this response. Kinda missing the point, guys.

The $15k is the threshold for civil disputes to be tried in Florida's circuit court system.

I'd be more pissed if first responders couldn't figure out how to get into my car without the door handles being accessible, and subsequently let me die from asphyxiation.

$15,000 is probably the minimum jurisdiction of the court they filed in. it's also below the amount necessary for federal diversity jurisdiction. so you plead "seeking more than $15,000" because that gets you into the state trial court you need to be in to hear the case (rather than, say, small claims, which probably can't award more than $15,000), but because you've not plead that you're seeking $75,000 or more, you may be able to keep out of federal court.

Telsa really screwed up with their door handles.

On the model 3 sometimes it takes 2 hands to open it from the outside. From the inside, it's a button that opens windows on every other car.
