Would you be opposed to "Autodrive"?

Inspired by the fact that we're ALL idiot drivers, whether to obey the rules of the road or not.

I'm curious to find out if you all would give up your freedom of being able to control your car for the sake of the safety of a computer-controlled GPS-navigated "autopilot" on roadways, or not.

In LA, autodrive would probably save like $10 billion a day in lost time due to traffic

Yeah, I'm going to trust an automated system that will undoubtedly have government control measures built-in, which can then therefore potentially be exploited by no-goodniks.

Sure, why not. I barely drive anyway. I think I've driven my car once in the past 6 weeks and that was just to get it washed.

I would love that. In fact, we should just have auto-lorries instead of owning cars.

On highways, I'd consider it. But only if it reduced traffic congestion and increased the speed limit.

Not for my safety, but for the speed and efficiency.

Autodrive Enabled?
Yep. No more accidents, EVAR!
Fuck no! I didn't get a license just to ride in a taxi!
Obligatory "I can haz plain cheezberger?" answer that will get at least 20% of the votes.

Poll fixored. :p

For interstate and highways I think it would be a good idea.

Thereby making it effective to do so in the car since you can now hold both the magnifying glass and the tweezers at the same time, right?

I'm all for it if it means getting to my destinations faster and safer. Even better if this system also helps locate the nearest empty spot for parking in populated cities at the destination.

Not sure about the implications of this though. There would no longer be a need for drivers licenses. Anyone and everyone will want to own their own personal vehicle which would actually increase traffic. Mass transit would take a huge hit.

If it decreases the effects of traffic and allows for faster travel then most definitely. I can't wait for the day when people no longer need to know how to drive.

Absolutely. If there was a section of the road that was completely automated, then vehicles could zip along at whatever speed they are capable, assuming all of the vehicles had the same capabilities. I'd love to take a nap on the way home from work :).

You could plot a course that takes 10 hours to travel and do it at night while you sleep. Awesome!

I contributed to the effort to beat your 20% estimate for the cheezburger answer.

But if the auto-drive actually worked, I'd be all in favor. It should be able to hugely reduce traffic delays as well.

I'd love for everyone else to be automated plodding along at the set speed. I could then blast through the rolling obstacles on my way to work.

heck yeah, we can work farther from home and just zzzzzzz in the car.

edit: I'll have the seats removed and a mattress installed for maximum zzzzzzzzz goodness.

As long as I still have the option to drive somewhere I think I'd go for it. Hell, even if I didn't I think i'd like it.

Absolutely NOT. I work on (among other things) aircraft autopilot systems and see the problems they can have; the nightmares of an autodrive system with the utter lack-of-maintenance to which they will be subjected is beyond the average driver's comprehension. Autodrive seems like a great idea until catastrophic component failure.

Besides, they'll probably use a Microsoft OS. Do you want a literal Blue Screen of Death in traffic at 75 mph?
