Would you be offended?

I work for a large silicon valley tech firm and we require all employees to use their badges to gain access into any building. We discourage what is called piggy backing, when one person uses their badge to open the door and other people follow them in without using their badges. We are supposed to ask to see their badge before we let them in, however nobody does it.

For the entire time that I've been here I've been asked dozens of times to see my badge. I see these people everyday that work in my building yet they still ask me. I am young 22 year old asian male, but I do not dress like some punk kid off the street. Many times I am carrying a laptop bag along with a bunch of books, Imagine carrying 4 800-1000 page books. Would you ask someone to see their badge if you saw that they were struggling to carry 4 huge books and their laptop bag?

The thing that pisses me off is the look these people give you, you can sense their air of arrogance.

Today I got pissed when someone asked for my badge, I was one of 4 people to piggy back in and the guy holding the door only asked me. He said do you have a badge? I said of course I do and kept walking. The only reason why he didn't ask to see it was becuase I needed to use my badge again to get to 2nd floor where I work. I could see him following me with his eyes via the window on the door.

Sorry about the rant, but I've worked hard to get here and I don't need anyone making me feel like I don't belong. Would you be offended?

We have the same thing where I work, everyone badges in & out.

Part of life, get over it.

If you don't like it, I hear McDonald's doesn't require a security check at the door.

Yes, if I was constantly being asked.

BUT, your company is simply trying to protect their intellectual property, etc. by using this policy. It's annoying, but in these days of corporate espionage, one has to take all of the precautions they can. :)

Yep, and I'd have taken him to task for not asking the others. I'd have gotten pretty loud about it too!

Every secure facility I have ever worked in we wore our ID's clipped to our shirts or hanging around our necks. Easy for anyone to see. Do you carry yours in your pocket or someplace it can't be seen?

That wasn't my point, I completely understand the policy and totally agree. What I don't agree with is the fact that I seem to get singled out more often than not.

That part would piss me off...

As long as you don't feel you should be exempt because of where you are, then I'd say you have a valid point.

Where I work piggy backing is OK, but if you're carrying a bag of any kind you have to have it checked.

Bring it to their attention next time.

I keep it on my belt, unless I am wearing a long sweater or something, it can be seen. Today I was wearing a button down shirt and I'm not sure he could see it. I couldn't see a badge on of the other workers. Two were women who typically keep their badges in their pockets and purses.

Could you just wear your badge on your belt or around your neck?

And no, I would not be offended. If that's the company policy (no piggy-backing), each person is supposed to make sure they aren't letting unauthorized people in.

Where I work we used to be lax on that subject because people felt awkward asking to see someone's badge. Then we had a rash of laptop thefts, so the result was they put in about 5 times as many places where you have to use a badge, instead of just at the front door. We all wish we had been more careful back then, because it's a major PITA now.

As the "Security Director" for my company, I can only say that I wish MORE people would be willing to check other's badges, especially in a fast-growing company where no one knows everyone else unlike the situation years ago.
Especially if you're "lugging" a bag full of stuff. Sorry, but that's a GREAT ploy to help you steal stuff. You should get one of those snappy things that you can clip to your belt. If your badge is plainly visible as you're walking in, no one's going to ask you for it.

At one of my previous jobs, I walked in and out carrying my toolbag which looks much like a laptop bag. I worked there for 6 months and only ONCE did any of the security guards even give me a second glance. That watchful young fellow stopped me and nicely asked if that was my personal bag. I said "yes" and offered to let him look through it.
He declined...their policy might not allow them to make such searches. Nonetheless, I made sure I stopped by the security management office the next day to let them know that if no one else, that one guy was at least paying attention and that he should be commended.

just make friends with the dude who checks badges...

once he becomes comfortable with you, maybe he won't pick you out of the lineup so often as he does.

if he doesn't want to be friends, then maybe he has something personal against you.

Oooh grouchy?

Maybe the guy holding the door knows the other people and doesn't know him. I've "piggy-backed" in the people that I know and then stopped someone at the end of the line whom I didn't know.

this is because the low paid security guards are envious... so they feel a need to exert what little power they can.

These people had just gotten out of their cars and were walking into work just as I was.

These people aren't even security guards, they are just regular employee's.

"Oooh grouchy?

If I hadn't seen so many smart ass replies, I wouldn't have cared, but all these smart asses overlooked the main point of this whole topic. If you can't put a little more effort into reading the damn post, you ought to just STFU!

It may be annoying but it is needed.

Who is to say that you were not fired yesterday and you were back to shoot up the place today?? It is unfortunate but I think it is justified. Grin and bear it...

:D
