Project: Wireless Mailbox System

Description: It alerts you when something is in your mailbox. For several people I know, this is a huge hassle since their mailbox is very far away (rural area). Essentially there is a receiver in your home that somehow (visually or audibly) lets you know when you have mail.

I know this exists - I am not trying to reinvent it. However, I am a computer engineer and I do this type of thing for fun, so I was wondering if there is any interest on ATOT. I am not interested in making money, but only developing it for fun.

I have found quite a few of them for $60-$80 dollars and I am thinking I can make it better and cheaper. The real goal here is to make christmas presents for my family and friends but the development costs are too high if I only make 4-5.

Enter ATOT.

If I found a few people who were willing to just pay for the costs (only parts, not my time), then it would be more feasible. I'm not looking for people to fund my project. I can do that all on my own, but I just don't see this as being a high priority so I'm not going to drop a few hundred dollars on it (understandable, right?).

Anyway, I was thinking if I could get 5-6 people to commit to "buying" one, then I could produce enough to make it cheap. This has a dual purpose - I'd be giving you a nifty gadget that is actually useful. If I actually wanted to go ahead and do this project, I'd be building at least 4 of them to give as presents and the rest would be for the people who paid for them (it isn't worth it unless I can buy things in bulk, which is 10 or more (don't start any alternator jokes about this either - it's different for electronics)).

Let me reiterate - I'm not looking for donations, funding for some crazy project that I want to build all for myself, or anything else. Every dollar spent would be available to view and there would be a set price (remember, parts only) before anyone committed.

Just so you know I'm legit, here is a pic of a recent circuit board I made (I designed + soldered the bigger PCB, the smaller one is a pre-bought module). It has a wireless module on it used for communicating with 6 other nodes to calculate position and speed of an object in the middle of the array. Essentially it is doing triangulation but with 6 transmitters and 1 multi-ceiver. The reason I used 6 is because it was the same price as 3 (which is what I'd like to avoid in the above scenario). You can see my name in the silkscreen if you look hard enough and match it to my profile. PCB

Edit: I read over this and it sounds like begging. It isn't. I have a full time job and can afford this all on my own. The reason I am asking ATOT is because I thought people here might be interested in buying something like this. I AM NOT looking for handouts or funding. Please understand that.

I was getting around to typing that. Sorry you beat me to it.

Come on, let's aim higher. Build a mailbox that opens the mail, scans it, emails you digital copies, shreds it, and puts it in the recycled bin.

If there was a way to guarantee that people could install it correctly, this could all be done ($$$). I was thinking more low-budget haha.

Can it be used in any kind of mail box? It might be cool to put one in my dorm room box so I don't have to go down and check every time I'm expecting a package.

How far are you from it? If it is very far and there are considerable numbers of obstructions, probably not. It all depends though because I'll probably be using the 315MHz band, which can penetrate quite a few walls.

4th floor at the opposite end of the building...quite a few walls in between.

How about having it explode if the mailbox is opened twice in one day without a special code being sent to it. Pipe bombs are cheap!
