Would you be embarrassed buying a $6.50 item in quarters?

Don't feel like paying $2 in ATM fees because I want a $6.50 pack of cigarettes from the local mini-mart (credit card minimum is $15 there). Can dip in to my laundry stash of quarters... Though would you be embarrassed? Hmmm.. It's 1 AM here and I'm antsy!

Nope!

I have gone through my change jar many times for mall purchase because I don't ATM transaction fees.

Merchants are often appreciated if customer pay with change because it save them from giving customer smaller coins when they run short of change.

homeless people do worse all the time. Im sure you will be fine. I've paid for stuff with many dimes, nickles, and pennies. Boy, was the cashier not happy, but you gotta get rid of the change somehow...

Having worked behind a register for many years, I can tell you that paying $6.50 in quarters wouldn't even come close to registering as an unusual purchase. Old ladies cleaning out their purses and paying $12.00 in small change, no quarters - THAT's always annoying and happens far more often than you would believe. They also make the comment, "I know it helps you guys when people pay with change." "Well, actually, we keep about $500 in change in the safe so we don't run out."

For what it's worth, I've paid for $3.xx in gas with loose change, mostly pennies and nickels. It was better than running out of gas (didn't have my debit card with me.)

No, at least it's money.
It's when I need gas on the Thursday before payday and all I've got are pennies unrolled that I go in all apologetic.

6? Try up to $7.75 in the city (NYC). The norm is $7.... CT is actually pretty reasonable, I buy those buy 2 get one free packs there and the average is about $3.50 a pack.

Mission accomplished, the cashier didn't seem phased or bothered at all.

Grats. =)

I live in VA and a pack of Turkish Royals is about 3 bucks.

Moving to Maine and if I remember it was around 5.50 for a pack.

I use all my spare change at Costco to buy their delicous food items. Some of the workers find it funny -- others don't.

Nah. If it's 1 am, and I'm the only person at check out, then no, I would not be embarrassed. I love the looks those middle eastern clerks give, when they have to count change. It's almost like they're alergic to it...hate to touch it.

I save those times for the local 7-11. This one guy looks like his head is gonna explode. When you go there and buy a pack of cigs, give him a $20, he actually lifts the change out with the bills, and will not handle the change with his bare hands. The fact this bothers him so much, just causes me to find ways to make him handle change. :)

Wouldn't be embarrassed at all, especially because a $15 credit card minimum is BS.

I wouldn't be embarrased... have it counted or sorted ahead of time if possible, but for quarters it's not so much of an issue as it would be if you came in with dimes, nickles, and pennies.

Min. Credit Card Charges are almost always against the Businesses Agreement with the credit card company... College's and Gov't is the only exception usually.

I've paid for more than in change when buying gas before. :p

As a matter of fact, I'll be doing it again in about a week.

I'd pay that in pennies if they have a credit card minimum. Why on earth would you be embarassed? Its legal tender.

Btw, $6.50 for cigarettes? Ouch, time to quit. Also, I love my USAA debit card. They pay up to $15 in ATM fees each month. W00t!

No way, I paid for a $1 iced tea in dimes and pennies because that's all I had in my desk at the time.
