Would you be comfortable entering your license plate# over a non-secure connection?

Just curious. Would you be OK with entering your license plate# on a web page, that was not 128-bit SSL? There would be no personal information captured except for that. No name, address, nothing. I'm working on an application and am trying to decide whether to buy an SSL certificate.

I don't know why not. Your plate # is public information anyway. Everyone sees it as you're driving around.

That's true. Just wondering.. some people are paranoid about that kind of thing. 🙂 It's important to note that NO personal information is gathered at all. Maybe IP address for anti-abuse measures, but that's it.

I don't care. I'm sure the 10,000 other cars I see per day don't mind that I see their plates every day, either.

I'm seeing a lot of people posting that they wouldn't mind, but I see 5 votes from people who would not be comfortable. Could those people explain why?

I wouldn't mind but I'd get a StarterSSL for about $10 a year and use that just to please people that want secure connections. Remember people that don't mind insecure will also use a secure form, but those that demand a secure form will not use a insecure form.

$10 a year for a cert isn't much if the form has any sort of value to you.

I'd personally be comfortable, but there are a lot of paranoid freaks out there. Either get a free certificate like I linked above, or get a normal one, just to appease them.
