Would you accept free money if it meant you must retire?

It sounds like an easy question. I'll explain further.

You could receive $20,000/year forever. (like the McDonalds prize)

Would you accept that if it meant you could not work and try to earn over $20,000/year?
Also, you may not do anything to add to the 20k. (not realistic)

i would give up working a "real" job for the guaranteed 20k/year (must be after taxes). I'd submit to a waiter/fast food job to spend my idle time :)

No....nowhere near enough. Especially after inflation -- what's 20k in 40 years? Probably not much..

Ditto that.

What good will $20K a year do you if you can't work? You spend most of it on living expenses (rent/mortgage, food, car, clothes, gas, etc.) and since you have so much time free you need to occupy yourself with SOMETHING.

What the hell can I do with $20k? I could keep living in this one bedroom apartment and rent would take up half of it. $20k is jack sh!t.

Well I only make $20k before taxes now and have a house and 2 paid for cars so I'd probably do it. For $30k-$40k I would be all over it :). It would have to go up with inflation though. I have plenty of money for just myself and 2 dogs but if a women came along and she wasn't allowed to work either then I'd be screwed :). Low housing cost are nice.

Yeah, sounds good...I would go from job to job every few months trying to experience everything....could do with being more than $20,000 though...think thats about £14,000 UK....not enough really!

20k a year, with no job? No. I live alright on about 25k/year right now, so if I could pop a part time job onto that number, I'd be all over it.

i'd take the 20k, but i'd have to be able to work a part-time job at least. If it was 50k+, i'd say yes in a sec tho.

Um, No.

Minimum wage here in Oregon is $6.75, I believe.

That means you make 12960/year, before taxes, 40hrs/week. Probably a little less realistically.

20k isn't *that* bad. If you were smart, it would not be hard to live on 20k/year for the rest of your life.

Especially if your wife made 20k too ;)

God no I make more than that and I plan on making even more in the future. $20k would suck. I'd just sit around all day doing nothing and not having the money to do anything either.

Anybody that's living on minimum wage is living in poverty.
