Amare is a beast, but he has the assist leader nash passing the ball to him.
plus one of the best all around players in marion also on his team.

yao has mcgrady, but it's too early to call yao a bust.

in terms of fantasy sports, yao is overrated and amare is a stud obviously.

NBA is a business, all about making money and marketing, as soon as you get that through your head, you won't have a problem answering this question.

Exactly! When Yankees signed Matsui for $7 million a year, that prompted a Japanese TV station to sign a contract with Yankees, so that they could broadcast their games in Japan. Add Jersey sales to that and Yankees have a pretty good player and probably ended up making more money that they're paying him.

If Houston were drafting again, knowing what they know now, i'm not sure they wouldn't pick Yao again.

sure, Amare has monster numbers, but what will happen next season when other teams adjust to Amare's playing style? Yao will continue to get better.

BTW, it isn't MJ vs Sam Bowie type choice we are making here. Yao is a top 5 center in the league right now.

The answer to your question is a resounding yes.

There are too many good PFs in the NBA today. Stoudemire can't even be considered one of the top 5 PFs. He is nothing special.

Yao on the other hand is a center. He can be a huge impact player if he learns to play aggressively. Even in his present form, other than Shaq, can you really name anyone else at the center position that's better than Yao? I think not!

Btw he is only 24, still very young and he is definitely not skinny at 310 lbs.

outside of the marketing aspect, i'd take amare. if yao were not chinese, basically he's primoz prezec or any other random semi decent center, just 7-5.

nba is moving to a more running gunning league with the new rules. and amare runs like a guard. yao runs like someone chained a cement block to his leg. yao also has barely any jumping ability which is further worsened by the fact that he doesnt even jump quickly (not springy at all) and short arms, and he's not aggressive. thats why at 7-5 he blocks barely any more shots than some small forwards.

yao is a better passer, and has more moves, but physically and potential wise, i think amare wins. amare can always learn moves. yao will never become a fast runner or jumper.

amare is not really a true center, more of a power forward. from the standpoint of putting pieces together, there are many more quality power forwards than there are centers.
also depends on the style of play the team is going towards. traditional inside out game with a big man or smaller ball run and gun.
defense is what wins in the playoffs too. how many years have the mavs and kings gone out and hung a landslide of points on teams in the regular season and then get beat by the spurs or lakers?
even without the business money making side of things i think i'd be more inclined to take yao over amare.

Look, Ming is a nice story and all that, but he has no stamina, and is a surprisingly bad shot blocker for a guy who stands 7-5. Plus, for all his alleged court smarts, his assist total is paltry. It's time to judge him on actual production, not potential.
