My current machine (Since 2003) is an old Dell Dimension 8250

Specs:

PIV 2.4 Non HT
1.5 gig PC1066 RDRAM
64 Meg NVIDIA Quadro 4 AGP card
1 Terabyte Samsung Spinpoint F3 on a PCI SATA controller card

I use this machine for basic desltop work, watching movies, photo editing with the GIMP and thats about it. It runs great with XP..would Windows 7 be too resource intensive for it?

I would probably run just fine, but in your case, I'd stick with XP and wait until you get a new machine to run 7.

As long as win 7 supports your video card, I think you will find win 7 as good or better than XP.
