Would Win2k run ok on a 300mhz P2?

The system will also have 64 mbs of ram. It'll basically be used for a file server and i'll put my dsl modem on it. The box will be using zonealarm and apache too. I might use PCanywhere or something similar too. I'm not looking for a speedy pc server just something that will work fine. What do you all think?

I ran my main box as a P2 300 with Win2k for quite a while. It ran just fine playing games and hosting files for people. It was a bit slow in the game department, but worked just fine for what I needed.

Seems like a good system for what you described. The only suggestion I have would be possibly get more RAM.

HELL no. And I repeat, HELL (are you frickin nuts!?) no.

My celeron 500 with 256MB PC133 wasn't good enough for it.

Of course, I'm spoiled with the rig I have now :D

Upgrade the RAM and it'll fly (for a simple server). Otherwise, be prepared for long boot times. My Server's a P200 w/ 96MB RAM.

It will run, but won't be fast. And more memory will not only increase the speed, but also the stability.

64 mb ram is just about cutting it.. suggest going 128.. makes life a lot easier 256 is good.

For that kind of application it will do fine.. however i prefer using VNC rather than PC Anywhere...but you can try pcanywhere too its a decent peice of software. Or you can try Netmeeting.

Yes it will run. On a side note I had a guy call in the other day with a K6-2 350 running Windows XP. Damn that thing was slow. Microsoft says the minimum is a 300 mhz CPU.

I've got Win2k SERVER on a P2-300 with 64 megs of ram running my web services. It's not very fast doing things on it(running apps or opening admin applets), but it works just fine for serving up files off the web.

Whatever dude. I'm still running a 300a@450 as my primary and only computer, and this thing runs great. I haven't even bothered with looking at a new setup, since this one runs so well. I don't even know what current CPU speeds are like right now. 700mhz? 800?

Nobody needs 2 ghz for web browsing, emailing, and MS Wording. And for a server, the 300 mhz will work just fine. Just get some more ram.

I had Win2K on my 300mhz 96mb ram laptop, getting a new harddrive, very tempted to put in WinXP on that thing for the quick boot up times. What are your opinions?

I've run W2K pro on my PII 233mhz with 128MB memory. I currently have W2K server installed on it and it runs fine.

Yoiu need more RAM, otherwise it'll be unbearable.

I used to run 2k on a 233mhz laptop with 128 and it fine, but idle RAM usage is more than 64, so there'll be LOTS of swapping.

I suggest you pick up another 64mb of ram.
