Would Win2000 be better than XP for gaming on laptop?

I'll be getting a gaming laptop (probably Dell 9300) sometime between now and June. Would wiping the hard drive clean and installing Windows 2000 pro be better for gaming than using the XP that would come with it? I'm thinking that with win 2000 I could get away with only 512mb of RAM where most people suggest 1gb for XP when gaming.

Windows XP is generally more compatible with games than is Win2000, especially older ones. I would stick with XP if I was going to game, personally. The only possible reason that I could see using 2K over XP is personal preference or low RAM. However, you can't buy anything really anymore thats even worthy of gaming with less than 256MB RAM. Most are 512MB or more, and XP is therefore better.

So geforcetony would Win2000 be better with 512mb of RAM or would sticking with XP be better with 512 of RAM or should I bite the bullet and pay the extra $ for 1gb of RAM? Be aware that this laptop purchase is a major expenditure for me. I'm just an underpaid county road worker so I can't make major purchases like a laptop on a whim.

I'm running XP pro with 512mb and a Sempron 2400+ and I haven't ever run into any issues with regards to gaming. I never did like 2000. I would run 98se for games until XP came out.

I hear ya about the budget thing. I'm a high school student who's about ready to venture into DeVry, so my budget's pretty tight too. I'm getting a Dell Inspiron 9300 for a graduation gift, so I'm pretty damn lucky (seeing as how the laptop is valued at $2600, but was only $1800).

Anyways, with 512MB of RAM, XP is the way to go. Besides, if you get the dough to double the RAM later (to 1GB), then it'll be even better. I've run XP fine with even 256MB of RAM, so 512MB should be fine for all but the most taxing programs\games. In fact, the Dell 9300 I ordered has "only" 512MB of RAM in it, and its got XP as well. When I get the money, I will upgrade to 1GB, but it will be fine for 512MB for a while. Though I will end up needing the extra RAM for programming (game design 😀 ), but 512MB will be fine to start.

I used to run win XP on 384MB of RAM. It was fine for almost everything. I eventually upgraded to 768MB because the load times in HL2 were KILLING me, and I needed it for some technical software I run. I think with 512MB you should be fine on XP. Cheers.

Here is the Fix all for this one... Get XP turn off all the flashy stuff and fades and all. Basicly go back to what Win2k looked like and you will save your self that much mem. And you get all the compatability of XP. As for memory you are best off at 512+ I try not to build systems with anylower JIC some program may need it.
