Would USB1.1 handle this?

I have a hp ze4145 laptop. 1.2 gHz AMD AthlonXP with 480 MB RAM.
I am using an M-Audio Ozone which is a 24bit/192kHz soundcard/MIDI controller. Can I use this while my laptop has a USB 1.1 external hard drive?

A typical scenario: I am running Ableton Live 3. The little indicator shows about an average 15-20% CPU load, looping 7 sound samples over and over. However I want to use an external hard drive (pref. 7200 rpms) for the sound clips/looping process. Meanwhile, my Ozone on the remaining USB port will be sending MIDI signals and continually act as the 24/192 sound card.

Does this make much sense? Let me know what you guys think.

USB 1.1 is 11Mbps (IIRC) which =~ 1.25MBps (Assuming you get max throughput). 7 streams @ 128kbps should be fine.

Also keep in mind that USB is a controllerless interface and loads down your CPU for all it's work.

what if the sound clips are unaltered files such as wav? I'm thinking it will barely pull through.
Are there PCMCIA cards with two USB2.0 ports? what about firewire?
thanks in advance
