I am currently running Win XP pro. Would converting to Win7 be recommended?

rig:
CPU: Intel Q6600 2.4ghz
MOB: Gigabyte P35-DS3P
PSU: Corsair-620HX
RAM: 4gb ddr2
GPU: 8800GT 512mb
HDD: 75gb raptor and 500g seagate RAID array

by performance do you mean synthetic benchmarks? If so then it will prob vary.

Win7 has a better interface, better tools to get things done. Such as jump list and snappy windows. Direct 10+, super fetch, better memory management. etc

I couldnt go back to xp.

XP is less resource intensive than Windows7, but Windows 7 will run very nicely on your machine.

Windows 7 is faster than Vista.

I say upgrade. Install Win7 x64, and add another 4GB ram.

XP may be less resource intensive, but I think Win7 makes better/more efficient use of the resources available.

My specs:
Q6600
8500GT
8GB DDR2
500GB x 2 (7200rpm) in RAID0

According to specs, your mobo can handle 8GB. Second Gooberlx2's suggestion.

As everyone else has mentioned, with 8gb of RAM, Win7 would be a tad bit more "productive".

However for raw performance I still suggest XP and when you're rolling out something like point of sale applications you really want to watch the price vs. features, so XP becomes a no-brainer for those types of decisions.

Keep in mind that if you have dual GPUs or run a game with good DX10 support, it's possible for Windows7 to outperform WinXP in gaming benchmarks, but most of the time DX10 with Win7 is slower than XP with DX9. 🙂

Yeah, depending on the game, you're looking at 3 to 15 percent perf advantage to XP. Similar story with most app benchmarks too, although not enough to make ya all pissy (~6% or less).

The big issue comes with software compatibility. For example, I don't really want the bloat of Nero7 or later, but Nero 6.6 completely tanks on Win7/64. Fortunately, I dual-boot...which is something worth recommending: you can transition without giving up your daily driver, and can also assess whether or not you actually would benefit from 8GB of RAM (heck, my 6GB seems more than enough...)
