Would this work?

I have a computer hooked up through a KVM. Said computer has dual video, VGA and DVI. The KVM is hooked up to the VGA. If I ran a DVI cable from the computer straight to the monitor (monitor has dual inputs), would I be able to use the mouse/keyboard while viewing the computer on the DVI cable (DVI would not be connected to the KVM, VGA would)?

So it looks like:

............................Mouse - Kvm -Computer 1 - DVI Monitor
........................Monitor 1 ^........... ^Computer 2
........................Keyboard^

?

The KVM only has VGA right? So I have a VGA cable coming from the KVM to the 2001FP and then I'll have a DVI cable coming straight from the back of the computer (video card) into the 2001FP. Would I be able to control or would I be able to see the mouse if I'm viewing the monitor using the DVI cable? Or would it seem like I have two monitors?

So in my diagram, DVI monitor and Monitor 1 are the same? 😕

i think it'll work, but you'll have to switch your monitor's dvi and vga input when you want to use the KVM.

Yeah that's fine. I mainly want to use the DVI anyway since it comes out much more crisp and there's a bunch of interference when I use the VGA cable.

i work as a pc repair tech and i have found that that works fine... in most cases all you need for the KVM to fundtion is power from the keyboard port.... unless your KVM is a smart kvm that doesnt switch to it unless there is video on that line...

if hooked up just like InlineFour's pic then there is no reason it shouldnt work, ive done it before.

I've tried this KVM(d-sub) and DVI set-up in the past. The only problem that arose was that the monitor defaults to one of the inputs: I think it was the DVI, so when switching between KVM inputs the screen would remain showing the digital input until the monitor was manually switched to the analogue input using the OSD. Switching back from analogue to digital worked as intended.

I'm running that exact setup at this very moment. The only thing I don't bother with is running the VGA cable from one box through the KVM, if the other box is on DVI what's the point of connecting the VGA cable through the KVM considering you never actually need to switch it, I just have the VGA cable running from the monitor to the second box.

The only ****** part is changing from DVI-D to D-SUB back and forth when using the KVM switch. Maybe I'll invest in a DVI KVM!
