Would this video graphics card setup work?

You'd be better off getting something newer, just for driver support if nothing else.
Something like a PCI HD2400 might be cheaper if you can find one.
 
Forget the 7000 series card, try to find a HD1000 or 9XXX series for driver compatibility. IMO, the 7000 series would be very sluggish in day to day use.

I'm going to assume the x1300 is AGP. I've done what your trying to do and it worked, just try to get the PCI card as close in series as the AGP card. The PCI card can even be a 2000 series as well.
