would this system be an improvement?

I dont need anything super fast, no gaming or graphics, mostly mail and web surfing.

I have a P4 2.8 with 533 FSB, 2 gig PC2700 memory, and a 5400 RPM 30 gig drive.

Looking to buy the following

Systemax No O/S Desktop PC - Intel Celeron Dual Core E1200, MSI G31M3-F, 4GB DDR2 800MHz, 250GB SATA II, 20X DVD-RW, Gigabit LAN

Though this is a celeron, not P4, and the speed is slower, is the overall performance still a Boost?

I know this doesnt come with an OS, I will install WinXP.

This system is complete but no OS. Though it does have built in video, it seems to be good for what I need, and with 4 gig mem, the shared memory shouldnt be a problem.

I just would like to know how this system would compare to my system as far as speed.

This system is only $299, and comes with mouse and keyboard, brand new. I know there are faster and better computers out there, I just dont need them. Is this an acceptable performance increase?

Any helpful advice is appreciated.

Hey Jroc,

despite the lower core clock speed, would guestimate that the celery-run is going to be about 50% faster, partly because of the efficiency of the core, and partly from having two cores, not just one.

Closest benchmarks I could find (couldn't find celeron rated....very similar to these other CPUs except for cache size):

http://www.tomshardware.com/ch.../compare,382.html?prod[1258]=on&prod[1302]=on&prod[1301]=on&prod[1282]=on

Reading through some of these reviews might be helpful:

Looks like it will be faster, and fine for what you do.

Yes, it will be noticeably faster overall. That 30 GB 5400RPM drive is a turtle compared to newer drives.

Absolutely GO FOR IT. Its a low-power dual-core. For your uses you don't need faster. The only thing that really bogs you down is doing multiple things at once. With this dual-core your problems and hiccups will go right away.
