Would this make me into a jerk?

Like many people around the holidays, my budget gets a little tight.

I have two brothers and 1 sister. I already bought decent gifts for the sister, and I have plans in place for the younger of the two brothers. The other brother is currently away from home in college. His interests are definitely in gaming, and his system is fairly decent. A s939 A64 3000 with an X1800XL video card. While hardly being top of the line, its still a respectable system. Unfortunately, its also not exactly easy to upgrade either. s939 X2s have gotten scarce, and expensive. Getting a faster video card is also out of the question due to budget concerns.

However, if I were to make a charitable donation, in his name, to a tax deductible foundation . . . would that make me a jerk? I get to feel good about helping out a good cause, he gets to feel good about helping out a good cause, I get the money back in tax season. Everybody wins.

I cycle by the year. Last year, I helped fund him building that computer, footing the bill for a gig of RAM and 1/2 the cost of the video card.

This year, it was my sister's turn to have the most money spend on her. Her computer is usually the easiest to upgrade too, her needs and use of it are very simple.

Donating to a good cause doesn't make you a jerk, but I would feel disappointed if that was the gift I got from a sibling.

What about getting him a game instead of hardware?

1. Computer upgrades aren't the only gifts out there. www.gifts.com
2. Purchasing something for 2/3 of your siblings probably won't go over well, really.
3. Donating something will make you feel nice, but how will it make your brother feel good? He didn't donate on his own free will, he was forced. Welfare anyone?

Get him something you jerk. You can probably spend less then what you're going to contribute and get him something he likes more. Why don't you ask for your own gifts to be cheritable donations?

Get him a new mouse or keybord or some other electronic gadget.

Hell, if he's at college, get him a drinking game.

EDIT: Came across pretty harsh, at least you're still thinking of your family. Its just that on Christmas, even though you may have spent more on him last year, did the other siblings still get something for themselves?

Get him a pie, that would be great. You can bake him a cheesecake (it's pie, not cake).
Or bake some cookies or brownies.

Only if it's something he actually cares about. Ie - if he cares very much about cancer, I think it would be a fine gift to make a sizable donation in his name to a charity that he has interests in. But don't just get him a donation to something he doesn't give a sht about.
