Would this make an OK "Poor Man's Server Rack"?

There will be water and smoke in the kitchen.😵
Only if you use the kitchen for... you know... actual cooking. Which, I generally don't.

But I've decided to get the 6 shelf unit from Newegg (~$60 after promo), and then put it into my bedroom, in place of my existing wooden three-shelf bookcase, that's holding some of my gear.

Edit: Btw, those shelves are really nice, @mxnerd , but way too rich for my blood. I'd rather drop $3K on a 10GbE-T upgrade, than spend $180 instead of $60 on shelves. Just me. I'm more functional-oriented. Then again, maybe that's why there's no female living with me.

Edit: Ended up getting the Walmart 5-shelf metal "heavy duty" shelf after all.

You put the stack in your bedroom?

I use one of the generic resin five shelve storage units and it sits in the basement.

There are cheap racks to be found on Ebay. I bought one for ~120 bucks. It is basically a 4 post rack without sides. Not pretty, not great, but it works fine for home use.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. You'll want a landline phone in that rack too so you can still cook order pizza if the cell network goes down. 😛 Redundancy is key.

If you ever want a real rack though consider a 4 post, they come in pieces and you assemble it yourself, so they tend to be cheaper to buy and cheaper to ship. Deals are hit and miss though. I got mine on Tigerdirect years ago, or maybe it was NCIX I don't remember, but it was an actual retailer. Ebay etc tends to cost too much for shipping, but worth checking. Be careful though once you get a rack the rackmount gear bug kicks in and you spend lot of money. I somehow have 2 42U racks now. One of them is mostly empty though. Got it for free so why not!
