Would this make a good gaming monitor?

PROS:
good response time,
huge screen,
good contrast ratio,
good brightness

CONS:
resolution/size ratio is way off, imagine how huge the pixels have to be to fit 30" at 1280x768, my 17" monitor is 1280x1024,
it's a TV, not excatly designed for computers, but it will work.

that's all I can think of.

does anyone have any experience with large screen, "low resolution" gaming such as this product would offer?
Or does everyone stick with the standard "designed-for-a-computer" monitor?

Hooked up my computer to my dad's HDTV before I moved in January and it looked great. All you have to figure is how far away you're going to be viewing the screen from. TV's have a big screen/low resolution in comparison to monitors because you and probably several other people are all watching the TV at once from further away than you would view a monitor. Pixel pitch is only relative to how far away you're going to be from the screen.

Games looked amazing on the HDTV by the way, and my dad's was that resolution on a 42" model, not 30".

I just ordered the Dell 30" LCD. I plan to use it exclusively for gaming. The resolution might be low, but nothing to make a fuss about. Everyone is raving about the 37+ inch ones having 1900 X 1080 or whatever when it is pretty much the same if you scale it down to under a 30" LCD with 1280 X 768. I guess it all depends on your personal preference.

I am currently using a 19" at 1024X768 and just to get an idea of what it would look like compariively, I set it to 800 X 600 and that is about how it will look in comparison. Takes a little bit of math and so on, but you can figure out aprox how good the picture will look, at least the resolution side of it.

However, you still should see it before you buy it... I was going to purchase the Dell 2405FPW, but once I seen the Dell 30" in action, I changed my order. It simply is a beautiful picture when running in its native resolution.

Some people might think it was a bad decision, but I doubt it. I'd would much rather not be locked into a high resolution monitor. Because when games start to get too demanding for my 7800 GTX, then, well, I need to have a way to lower the resolution. If I lowered it on a high resolution LCD, i'd pretty much destroy the picture quality.

Anyway, I know each person has their own preference, but these displays are beautiful.

If you can get both a 2405 and a 30in+........

use the 2405 for high detail gaming and general web usage on your desk...
hook the 30incher up and fix it to the wall opposite your couch, use a wireless keyboard and mouse and use it to play games like Worms 4 etc...heh

A friend showed me his plasma TC he had hooked up for gaming and it looked pretty nice. It was a 42" plasma with something like 852 x 480 resolution. Since this is a 30" LCD with 1280 x 768 resolution, it will look a lot better. The screen is 25.3" wide, with 1280 pixels, giving a pixel size of 0.5 mm. My 19" LCD has pixels that are about 0.3 mm. I think 0.5mm pixels will look fine. I set my LCD monitor to 640 x 480 (scaled propertionally) to give me 0.6 mm pixels to see what it what look like, and it was a lot better than I thought it would be. I think that a 30" LCD would be fine for games and some computer work.

For an Xbox or other console, hell yes (it'd have to support high def 480p or whateva it is). For a PC, ehhh, I'd choose something else more fit (not a TV).

/Agree to a "T" :D

Yeah, just takes a little math. On my 19" CRT (18") 600 vertical lines of resolution scaled up to the LCD vertical size of the screen is just a tinge over 768 pixels when taken into account the higher dot pitch size and so on... 800X600 looked great on my monitor, totally playable.

Of course, I can use 1024X768 and just have the black bars on the side... It might bother some people, but it does not bother me at all. I have gotten used to it from my laptop widescreen.

I'll let you all know how much I enjoy it when it comes... Should be here Friday.

I've done some gaming on my 76" screen for my Infocus 4805 projector. 720x480 but I sit about 10 feet away. With AA/AF and eye candy turned on it looks very good to me at that distance.

Yeah, I play sometimes on my projector (800x600) on a 80" wide screen.
AA is kind of necessary, or I get annoyed with the jaggies/detail.
It's connected by VGA, and the desktop looks great (if small, real-estate-wise)

I have a feeling you'll enjoy that TV as monitor.
I know that most CRT TV's that I've used as a display on one of my computers has sorely lacked crispness and detail. That viewsonic shouldn't be anything like that.
