see, i'm going to wire a cat 5 from a router on floor 1, down to floor 0

wire will connect to 1 pc on floor 0

in the future

I 'MAY' on floor 0, plug that wire to a router, not a switch....

in such case, shouldn't that wire going from floor 1 to floor 0 be a crossover cable instead of straight thru...

so would that coupler change the cable to the functionality of a crossover... or will it just make it stilll a straight thru cable in terms of function.

Yeah, that'll work. May not be necessary, though. Most switches and hubs have an "uplink" port or one that's switchable between MDI/MDIX. Most of the switches I've bought recently go one step better and all ports are auto MDI/MDIX, so you just plug the cable in and it works.
