Would this be possible ? (networking Xbox)

There's a Wireless Router in the house..

My brother has his computer in his room and is using a USB wireless
network addapter to get online

He has an Xbox in his room too

If he put a NIC card in his computer, could he share his connection with the
Xbox running an Ethernet cable form the computer to the Xbox,

Or does he have to get a seperate wireless bridge for the Xbox ?

<-- Not a networking guru, but...

How's the XBOX supposed to get its own IP if you just hook it up from the PC in his room ? I don't think even a crossover cable from that PC can help in this case...

This was something I've often wondered... how does one hook up XBL if they use wireless in their home ?

No computer in the house has their on "internet IP"

Just the router..

all the computers are like 192.168.1.***

I was thinking he could use internet connection sharing on his computer so its acts like
a router for the Xbox

You know what? Theoretically it should work using ICS on his PC, but it's been so long since I had to use it (almost 3 years ago, before I bought a Linksys) that I forget if it does distribute a separate IP (it should) and if it has other shortcomings. I think you need a crossover cable instead though.

Yes, that will work. However, you need something like Windows XP to be the Gateway for the connection. If you have that, it'll work no matter HOW the connection is getting to the gateway, Win XP will be able to push it to other device acting like the brdge.

Yes, other OSes do ICS (*Internet connection sharing), I found XP does it most efficently and WinXP will even provide a Windows Private addrress in the 192.169.*.* range. 🙂 Will it route properly, it depends on the functionality of the USB connection to the computer that will be serving the connection.

Cool.

I thought so but wanted to be sure before he shells out for an Xbox live kit
(He doesn't have the money for a Wireless Bridge)

Should work fine with ICS enabled. The host computer becomes the DHCP server for the client machine, the xbox in this case. Crossover cable is indeed needed for the pc to xbox hookup, or use a hub with regular patch cables.

So is there a way to hook up XBL with wireless ? Is there a networking device that plugs into an RJ45-end and convert it to wireless ?

Heh, I'm about a year behind on this stuff...

And yes, a crossover cable is used when doing ICS. I don't know about the XP (Gateway) thing though.

I can confirm this. It is currently working in my home. My setup is thus:

DSL > Hub > 1st computer(firewall(Linux)) > Wireless Router > Wireless Transceiver > 2nd Computer(Gateway for 3rd (WinXP)) > 3rd Computer/Device/whatever

Ok.. one last question.

(Haven't ever actually used XP Internet Connection Sharing)

Does any client software need to be installed on the client?
That's the only thing I'm thinking may prevent it from workng with an Xbox

Easiest way if you have an extra 100 bucks around is to get one of these and just hook up your X Box to it and go wireless. I am currently using this for mine and it works great.

(assuming, of course you have a wireless capable router already!)

i have wireless on my pc. i also have an intel nic in it. i have a cable going from intel nic to kingston 5 port switch. i have cable going from ps2 ethernet adapter to kingston 5 port switch. I share the wireless connection...viola

ICS will work just fine for sharing an Internet connection with an Xbox, even with a wireless adapter on the PC.

Skoorb uses ICS (no wireless tho), mainly cuz he's too frugal (read: CHEAP) to buy a broadband router to share his DSL connection.

When making the physical connections, these are the rules:

Connecting LIKE equipment = Crossover cable
Connecting UNLIKE equipment = Straight-thru

Therefore...
COMPUTER to COMPUTER = Crossover
COMPUTER to HUB/SWITCH = Straight-thru

In this kinda setup, a game console is considered a COMPUTER (or END-NODE)

The only thing I would be concerned about is added lag through the PC, especially with the USB NIC.

If you go the wireless bridge route, it could serve as the wireless connection for both the PC and the XBox.
Connect a cheap switch or hub to it (for the added ports) and then plug your devices into the the hub/switch, something along the lines of this:

DSL->Wireless router>>>Wireless Bridge->Hub/switch=>>1 to computer, 1 to Xbox

BTW: I should have said "used" when referring to Skoorb's connection, since he is STILL boycotting XBL and MA since a netcode fix doesn't look to be forthcoming.
