Would this be a worthy upgrade

My system isn't exactly what I'd consider sluggish, actually it works quite fine for almost everything with the exception being a few games (BF3, Civ 5). But there are newer games coming out like Rage, Arkham City, etc that I assume will be more taxing on my cpu.

My current setup is listed in my signature, but I'll retype it anyway

e6750 @ 3.5
aBit ip35-e
4 gigs ddr2 800
bfg gtx260 216
19" monitor 1440x900

I've been considering holding off until AMD's bulldozer line comes out just because I'd anticipate price drops and I'd like to see what the most viable option for me (I have an older what I hope would be BD compatible gigabyte motherboard lurking around). But with all the delays I'm reconsidering waiting.

I was thinking of getting this stuff here:

i5 2500k
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3
4 gigs patriod ddr3

I'd recycle my graphics card, case, psu, monitor, etc.

Now my question is at around $450 is this a worthwhile upgrade or should I wait just a few more weeks? Will I see huge improvements in everything I do, or just extremely minimal gains in all areas but gaming? Is it better to spend $80-100 on a 775 quad for my board and wait another year or two? These are questions I've asked myself, I'm just asking for some opinions.

I never honestly expected to get this type of longevity out of my current system, but it's lasted me nearly 4 years.

do not waste money on your old platform as you would do better to sell that stuff. and with ram prices like they are it would be silly to get any less than 8gb of ram on a new build.

considering Bulldozer should be out next week, I would just hold off until then.

Actually, you are probably being more limited by your graphics card than the CPU, if your primary interest is gaming. Well, maybe not at the resolution you are running.

If you are spending the money for a new CPU, I would think definitely a new graphics card and bigger monitor would be justified.

Actually, toyota's advice is probably best: just get a new system. I suppose you could wait a bit to see if Bulldozer actually comes out "on time" for the next anticipated release date, but you could not go wrong with the 2500K either.

I think I will wait the week, if bulldozer sucks I'll go with this intel plan. If it's cost effective, i'll get it. I cannot get a new screen, I'm limited by space. Unless I find a 2ms 19" screen with a higher resolution, I'm stuck with what I have for the time being (until I get a new work area). Video games aren't my primary use for the computer, I do things like photo editing and vector and laser engraving, and make music. I don't think at 1440x900 I'll see a noticible gain with a newer graphics card

You're motive is to play games so definitely a GPU upgrade will bring some significant performance boost. BD is expected to have a good multithreaded performance over single threaded which most recent games still prefer stronger cores over more cores so I don't think it is a good choice to wait for BD if you're not doing something that is multithreaded.

You're probably better off with the Core i5 2500K regardless of what BD has to offer a few days from now.
