Would this be a worthwhile upgrade? 1700+ tbred to a 2400+ mobile.

Recently my mobo died on me, so I had to replace it and I got one of the SiS 748 genre. The Gigabyte
GA-7S748. This board supports 400 fsb AMD cpus, so I was thinking that if I wanted to, then perhaps I could upgrade.

Currently running a 1700+, not overclocked. (actually runs at 1466) this chip has 256k cache. Would it be worthwhile to buy one of those mobile 2400/2500+ chips off of newegg.com, and pop that in and overclock it a little bit?

I figured it might be cool if I could get one of those mobile chips crankin at 2.4 or 2.5 ghz, maybe higher if possible. Mainly I would be looking forward to the fsb improvement, hopefully get it running at 400 fsb, and that would be awesome. I'll also need to buy some ram that runs at that speed, but i was going to get more ram anyway (since I only have 256 mb right now)

And if you guys think that this is worth it, what kind of cooler do you think I would need? I'd prefer something silent and cheap. Is there such a cooler like that, which can cool overclocked mobile bartons at high speeds?

What kinda of 1700+ do you have? If it is a Tbred-B and happens to have DLT3C as part of the string of letters and numbers on the cpu, then you probably dont have to upgrade at all 😀 Just OC it all the way. You will probably get 2.0ghz on 1.5V and probably max out at 2.2-2.3ghz.

Of course, if you want to spend around 90$ for a good mobile with good stepping, 2.5ghz shouldnt be tough to obtain granted you give at least 1.75V.

I'm not sure, I will have to check that out the next time I turn my computer off.

If I were to get a mobile chip and o/c it up to 2.5ghz, what kind of cooler would I need?
Silence is an important thing. And the cheaper the better of course (but getting it cheap is a hard thing to do when you are looking for performance and silence, heh)

(heck, i might need a new cooler anyway, if I do ANY overclocking, lol. I'm pretty that the one I have now isnt anything special.)

Well, i have the thermalright SLK 947U and it works nicely with a 92mm quiet fan. SVC.com used to have it for 20$ but i dont think its on sale anymore.

Alright,

I just looked at my chips. (I have 2 Athlon XP 1700 chips) one of them is a brown color, and the serial number is:

AX1700DMT3C
AGOIA0209XPAW

The other one is green, and the serial number is:

AXDA1700UT3C
JIUHB0312WPEW

are these any good? I have no clue how to tell whether its a 'b' or not, lol. im lost.

hey, thanks for the link, but for some reason it wont work.

I enter in:

AXDA1700DUT3C
JIUHB0312WPEW

EDIT: wait, nevermind, I'm an idiot, i just figured out what i was doing wrong

wow, yea, i just read a review and supposedly JIUHB is a really good cpu. 🙂

I'm going to give this one a little bit of tweaking I think, before I bother upgrading my processor. I'll just buy some more memory and play around with it. Hopefully I will be able to change the multiplyer.

DUT3C is supposedly a pretty good overclocker, not as good as DLT3C, but still pretty good. YOu probably can get 2.0 ghz easy, and possibly 2.2 ghz.

Ram, if you have the $$ get Mushkin,Corsair, OCZ at PC3500 if you can for a little future proofing and aiding in OCing. Try to get the lowest latency possible.

Yeah...not too bad. I have one running at 2.1ghz on my old classic Asus A7V133 board.
