Would this be a motherboard (epox 8K5A2+) or a video card problem?

My new epox system isnt booting or rather, it isnt displaying anything on the monitor. If your familiar with the 8k5a2+, then you know of the POST code led, but there are no numbers showing up on that when I try to boot. The other LED (LED2) lights up though. When I power on, the fans kick in, and i hear the hard drive spinning up, and the dvdrom starts spinning if theres a cd in there.

Now the video card is about 8 months old and its a visiontek xtasy GeForce 2 GTS. When I start up, theres no picture on the monitoor at all. I really dont have a spare video card to test the mobo but is there anything else I can do to find out the problem?

It's either the motherboard or the CPU. I had something similar happen to my 8K3A, and it turned out to be a bad board. You are probably going to have to RMA it. (Make sure you RMA it through the dealer, as Epox usually doesn't handle RMA's directly.)

Hey Brudda!

I have an 8K5A2+ and it's a good board. My OCing attempts have been thwarted due to bad Corsair RAM, but other than that, it's stable.

The fact that the numerical LEDs show nothing is what concerns me. I would reseat the CPU/memory/videocard. Was this CPU working in another system? If so, I would say the board is DOA. Do you have another AMD CPU you could throw in there just to check?

Also, Epox will handle an RMA directly. I thought my board was dead (turned out the memory sucked ass) and being the board was purchased more then 30 days ago, I applied for an RMA thru Epox rather than MWave. Epox sent me an RMA number and everything.

Well, I got a stick of Crucial PC2700 and the board is now humming away happily. My bad.

Anyway, try the above things...see what happens. Good luck. :)

well, i didnt have another system to test the cpu or video card on (or rather, i didnt wanna mess up the pc that was working by putting faulty parts in it). I guess Ill just have to order a video card and test it out.

I was going to ask how that RMA thing was working out with you MichaelID. How much was shipping and the turnaround time they gave you?

The motherboard is bad. I had the same problem. Return it back to your place of purchase for replacement or RMA back to Epox.

Yeah, if the video card was the culprit, your debug LED would still work. Since the LED isn't working, that means it's either the motherboard or the CPU. LED2 just shows the board is getting power, but not necessarily that it is working. If you have your PC speaker hooked up, you may hear a beep code which can help you find the culprit

Well, like I said; "the fact that the LED isn't working at all worries me." It really sounds like your mobo is DOA. Return it to the point of purchase. I didn't RMA my 8K5A2+ as I eventually discovered (with a lot of help from a few folks here) that it was my stinky memory AND and quirk w/the Nov 02 bios that will lock up the mobo on boot (at the Highpoint bios) if you have USB mouse or KB enabled.

The board is runnig fine right now. I have an NForce2 on the way though. :)
