would this be a fair tactic to use against my neighbors?

so, my neighbors have pretty much the most annoying dog ever. it's some kind of pug mutt.

they leave it out in their yard practically 24/7, and any time someone walks past their house (or, god forbid, I use the alleyway to enter my house from the back instead of the front door), the dog goes crazy and barks for 10 minutes, whether it's the middle of the afternoon or the middle of the night.

my 90 year-old landlady is petrified of this dog, especially because our houses are 5' apart and the dog charges the shared fence any time one of us is in the backyard.

I've spoken with the neighbors, as has my landlady, and we've both been brushed off.

so I'm thinking... maybe I should start going outside with my laptop and heavy duty headphones every night around 1-2 am, and just hang out in the backyard with the dog barking at me constantly until a neighbor calls the cops.

and then repeat every night until they either train the dog, give it to someone who can, or start taking it inside at night.

fair tactic? they can't really criticize me for just sitting in my own backyard, can they?

Just be glad it's not a rottweiler or some other BIG dog with a very loud bark...

My two little rat dogs are like the ones in your rant. Yap, Yap, Yap, at everything and every one...especially if someone walks down "their" sidewalk with another dog.

They seem to hate the neighbors on one side...(why do my half-chihuahua dogs hate Mexicans?) If the neighbors are in the back yard...my dogs bark at them incessantly.

No, they can't criticize you for that. Unfortunately, the dog will quickly get used to you sitting there and lose his impulse to bark at you, unless you're doing something to antagonize him.

But why wait for another neighbor to call the cops? Why not you call them and when they get there, demonstrate the problem? Or are you too intimidated by the dog and your neighbor to do the job yourself?

Or you could investigate one of those bark stopper devices. I have heard some actually do work.

Looks like the polite and diplomatic way to start dealing with this.

Or give the dog a poisoned piece of meat...dunno what more efficient though...

Absolutely unacceptable advice.

Call the police and complain about the noise in the middle of the night.

"its 1am and my neighbors dog is waking me up"

Most cities have regulations on noise. Use those regulations to your advantage.

This is what I would do. If the dog is really barking for 10 minutes at a time, they'll probably end up getting fined after a couple of calls.

You could try one of those ultrasonic dark bark things. We got one to use on our dogs, but it's hit or miss. It works on one of our dogs, but not the other.

The way it works is any time the dog barks, the device emits a really loud higg pitch sound outside normal human hearing range. They make them so they can detect barking up to 50 feet away I think, so that's something to maybe try.

I'm confused, why don't YOU call the cops?

Good luck getting something done about. Most barking ordinances are written to be almost completely unenforceable.
Let us know what happens.

I don't understand how people let their dogs bark all the time... I have 2 dogs and I am very sensitive to them barking, I let them in or get after them if they do it too much. One of my neighbors dog was barking all night, do they really not hear it? If you have talked to the people I would just take it to the next level and call the police of animal control. Most places have nuisance animal laws in place.
I am about to call animal control on my neighbor that lets her dog off leash wandering the neighborhood crapping in my yard. I talked to her and she kind of blew me off. Irresponsible dog owners are a dime a dozen it seems.

Go by city hall and get a copy of their noise pollution rules. Read the rules, understand the rules.

If the police do not do anything after being called out several times:

Go to the police station and talk to the chief of police
Go to city council meeting, ask why noise pollution rules are not being enforced
Sue dog owner in small claims court, bring copies of police reports and copy of city noise regulations.

How have you been "brushed off," OP? What did they say when you confronted them?

I would just advise calling the cops. Call them every night it happens. Go from there.

Hey, do you live by me? My neighbor does the exact same $hit with their dog. Except their dog is a pit bull mix of some type and is loud. In my community people don't have thick windows b/c of the relatively mild weather, so we can hear it inside our house. They obviously don't care if it's making noise though.

I have been hesitant to confront them for fear of retaliation. They have a pit bull, drive pimped out Escalade and a new Z350, like to play thumping music (which has gotten better actually), smoke pot once in a while, and are generally unfriendly and rude.

Is there a device that either responds automatically to the dog's barks or something that I can take outside and manually point it that direction when it barks?

Give the dog bud brownies.

But, realistically, get a device that detects dog barking. They emit a super loud and piercing tone that will shut them up on the spot.

Go outback with headphones and call the police. No need to wait for someone else to do it.

that thing worked for my SiL's dogs. they were constant barkers, and big loud dogs to boot. one neighbor kept calling the cops, even if it was one bark. he was a douche, but the barking was sometimes very annoying. they will still bark once or twice when someone gets to the door, but in the back yard they are quiet. the older one whimpers when he wants to bark, even tho the machine has been broken for over a year now.

get it to calm down and be quiet then feed it a dog treat, just drop it over the fence
keep doing it until he is super passive

plus you will have the satisfaction that their dog will probably like you better than them

Your stance of dominance is clearly not high enough for the dog to remain quiet unless you give it permission.

Reading this thread reminds me of how good my dog was (RIP) about staying nice and quiet. I would have to command her to speak in order to get her to bark. If she ever randomly barked in the middle of the night (she mostly stayed inside), it was an obvious sign that something was up. I say we did an excellent job raising her to be nice and quiet, unlike most asshats.

Damn she was a sweet friendly dog :'(

I would get the dog to bark to the point where it's hoarse.

But, as per the other comments, you call the cops.

Also, it's just an annoying dog. I guarantee you that if you did ignore it and didn't flinch each time it started up, it would just ignore you as well. Man has co-existed and lived with dogs thousands of years,... why do some people have trouble figuring them out??
