Would the support wires on an aperture grill CRT really bother me?

I suppose the best thing to do would be to go use one that someone else owns (maybe even at a store). Play games, browse, do whatever.

I have one and personally the two lines don't bother me. They're so faint you have to look to notice them.

I only realy notice them when the screen is very bright. Like a nearly white output.

They are always their if you look close enough, though.

If your the type of guy that gets bugged easily by little issues that you notice and get out of your head, then I suppose a different type of monitor would be nicer. Like if your listening to the radio in the car and you notice a little interferance between the motor's electronics and the station your listenning, and you never noticed it before, but now that you noticed it is a irritating as hell.

To me thought theses screens generally give higher quality screen output then any other monitor out their, so it's a acceptable trade off to me.

They're only really visible with a bright colored background, and you get used to them. I upgraded from the shadowmask I got in '93 or '94 about 2 years ago when it finally died, and for a day or two I was like, 'wtf?'. Then I got used to them and hadn't noticed them ever since, until I read a thread in the video forum complaining about them a few weeks ago.

Just saying "no" is very bad advice, it varies from person to person.
Most people won't, some will, I'm one of the latter, hence I coughed up alot of dough for a good shadow mask.

The only way to find out, as someone suggested, would be to use one for a while and see if it goes away.

Is the image quality vastly superior to that of a shadow mask CRT?

yes. text and straight lines are somewhat blurrier, but vibrant colors really shine on AGs - the reason why CRTs are still prefered to LCDs by many.

It never bothered me in all the years I owned one. I agree, the first few days you're thinking WTF is this, have I made a mistake, etc. But after that, the wires are just so small and insignificant it made no difference to me.

No, And we have 3 of them..It just kinda goes away after a while..

How large does a AG CRT have to be to need 3 wires? My 21" still only has 2.

It really depends on the person,in my case I can`t stand AG wires and prefer shadow mask to AG tubes, however I prefer my LCD to CRTs and think that it`s better then any CRT I`ve seen or used.

At work we have a Mitsubishi AG monitor which is high qualtiy however I don`t think it holds a candle to my LCD in DVI mode ,this is just my opinion of course.

The only way to judge a monitor is by your own eyes.

They have always bothered the hell out of me.

AG monitors usually have better brightness, but that is just about their only benefit. (And you can just turn up the brightness on a shadow mask monitor if you want it bright).

Shadow mask monitors have the benefit of straighter lines, better convergence, no wire shadows, etc. Thus I feel shadow mask monitors WERE vastly superior. I say 'were' since no quality company makes them anymore. Thus if you get a shadow mask now, it is either an old monitor or from a low quality manufacturer.

I'll never give up this 21" Cornerstone P1600 monitor at work (Hitachi shadow mask tube). It is by far the best large monitor I've ever seen. At the time I bought it, this monitor was #1 in all reviews that included Cornerstone monitors, and it deserves that ranking.

I noticed them on my dads 19" Trinitron a few years ago when he first got it not I don't even see them unless the back ground is really white. But even still they don't bother me at all.

I notice them occassionally on my 21" Nokia 445Pro, but it's really not much of a concern. It's got a Trinitron tube - very nice picture. Everything is sharp, all the way up to 1280x1024. It's probably good above that, but I don't use anything higher, as the refresh rate drops below 85Hz when you use a resolution higher than that, which I can't stand. Thus far, it's the best monitor I've ever used.
