all i knew were the F15 Eagles because i thought it was kick ass due to it's multi role as air and ground attacker

Would the TomCat be popular? Yea... it was highly publicized during the 1991 Gulf War, as well as other conflicts during that time period... Gulf of Hormuz (sp?) incident, and others.

Popular with who? The Navy? The Navy could give a shit about Tom Cruise... They liked it because it was a completely kick-ass flying weapons platform.

The general public? Does it matter?

What was the point of this thread? Pancakes? Bunnies?

I was going to go with an F-16, but after seeing the movie I opted for the F-14. Best decision I ever made. I love my F-14.

Yeah, I bought two after seeing the movie. I just had to request a tower flyby...

14s and 18s are the only carrier ready plane.

15s and 16s are not.

also that russian Mig 28 is fake... its actually a repainted F5.

more like the movie Top Gun wouldn't be so popular without the F-14 Tomcats. Those things carried this movie. Tom Cruise did not.

Actually I still love my F-16. It's easier to park and cheaper to maintain with only one engine.

I've always liked the classics. Sure my F-104 doesn't handle as well, but it still goes well in a straight line.

So many things bothered me about that movie. I kinda understand that they couldn't get a real Mig, but that just sucked.

Also annoying were the dogfights where the camera kept switching to different scenes... one scene had the wings folded in on the F-14, the next scene, two seconds later, had the wings out. :hmm:

I could watch the opening sequence of that movie over and over (at high volume on my home theater of course). The rest of the movie is a gay love fest with strong homosexual overtones but that opening sequence on the carrier deck is cool.

I thought the F14 was popular because it's the only combat jet you can fly with your oxygen mask unstrapped. How else are MIG pilots supposed to see how ruggedly handsome you are?

Yea, that opening scene is pretty kick ass. But I still liked the rest of the movie too, if that makes me gay, then so be it.

The overtones were just overtones up until the volleyball scene. Then it went into Richard Simmons meets the Village People and they have brunch.

Even before TopGun there was the Final Countdown. That is when the public really first saw the F14

Automatic spoiler deploys at 75mph, so obviously Tom had to brake into the tight 2nd gear right hander. It would have popped up again shortly into the next straightaway. I saw it on Top Gear.

Actors are so talented, it's hard to believe Tom learned to safely execute an inverted 4g dive in close proximity to the enemy with only a few weeks of simulator training.
