Would the cable guy lay down ethernet, for a tip?

We're getting a new cable install done this weekend (new building, wiring needs to be done from scratch), and would really like the rooms to have ethernet hookups...

Do you think an installer would entertain running ethernet to each room he's running coax, or is it not even worth asking?

For $$$ they'll do whatever you ask.

It's probably cheaper to find a low-voltage electrician to do it though.

Err... I would ask if he'd do it for like $100. If he's running cable, I don't see why not. Just don't expect him to wire the jacks for you. Make sure you provide cash.

Everyone has a price. His limitation will be time. You'll need to convince him it will not take too much time.

is that what they're calling 'rogering' these days?

Thats what I was going to say.

Sounds like some sort of sexual request.

It would probably depend on the situation and the installer in question. I never worked as a Cable Guy but I did do home theatre installations. People would ask if I would do this or that for extra all the time. Whether I said yes would depend on the person (were they nice?) the house (Messy, clean), my schedule, how my back was feeling (40" Tube TVs are heavy), difficulty and possible reward.

It doesn't hurt to ask. I would suggest throwing out a $ amount or asking what they would do it for. I doubt they would risk doing the work if you only give them a vague term like 'tip' as people have different ideas as to what is reasonable. Being nice, have a clean house and any equipment needed handy will up the chances of a 'yes'. If they say 'no' respect their decision. The more someone pressured me to do it the more I was determined to turn them down. Some people just don't know what 'no' means

Cool, thanks guys - $100 seem reasonable? One tv downstairs (with a media streamer), one tv with media streamer upstairs, and a router/server upstairs as well..

Seems low IMO, especially if you want in-wall cables with keystone jack terminations.

If I were to charge someone to do some cable runs I'd quote $75/cable for CAT5E or RG6.

So pretty much only 2 lines? Pfft, $50. You also have to remember he's running cable from the junction to each room, not from room to room.
