Would suspending a Subwoofer in air work?

I was thinking about how cool it would be to suspend a sub in air. like using 8 rubber straps. one coming out of each corner on the top and one coming out of each corner at the bottom and then having it hang in the trunk.

would that work?

But you wouldn't feel the rumble...

Those straps would probably absorb a lot of the sound, unless they weren't rubber, more like metal tied very securely.

Normally it would not work unless you get a special type of subwoofer.....can't remember what they call it.....

No, it would not work.

There is a configuration called an "infinite baffle" in which an exceptionally large enclosure (attic, a closed off room, etc.) is used as the enclosure. It's essentially free air except for one important detail - There is no wave passage from the front of the sub to the rear.

Infinite baffles require far less power than enclosed subs, & produce better sound, but you have to have a lot of space to set them up.

Do a search on google for cult of the infinitely baffled.

What he said. It doesn't work. All power are lost due to acoustic short circuit.

Wont work, the front and back of the speaker have to be isolated or they cancel each other out.

bolt it to the biggest heaviest thing possible
in the car, try and put it up against something beefy
bolting the box to the frame works great.... aaaahhhh

i got the impression he was talking about suspending the box. but that's still a silly idea, because the box is just going to vibrate back and forth and the speaker won't be able to push as much air because it has nothing to push against. (for every action there is an equal and oppisite reaction). so unless you really like your bass to be quiet, put the box down.
