I am also going with no - Mabie the UBER Hardcore geeks could handle it, but the general public woudnt be interested, thus it woudn't exist.

I don't think the light sabers are that important.
It is my belief, that if they were in some other movie, and not star wars, then the light sabers would not be famous.

i voted no. but on second thought, the movies even without lightsabers would probably still have been pretty revolutionary back then. i was comparing it to today's entertainment where star ships, telekinesis etc have all been done to death

i dunno, i think the light sabers a pretty defining feature of the series. It's hard to imagine the jedi without their light sabers.

The movie is very good regarding other things than lightsabers. I loved the starship fight at the beginning, and even ignoring all the special effects, the movie was well done.
I remember seeing other movies from that era, and the difference in special effects was like day to night. The special effects from Star Wars are acceptable or better even today.
Well, except for the Death Star explosion

Star Wars is swords and magic in a space opera setting.

Without the light sabers, you would need some type of dualing weapon for the "swords" part.
