Would someone tell me what "flaming" a thread means?

Sort of new to this and I have read that threads are ruined because of flaming. What does that mean? Just wondering.

That's a flame.

Basically, cutting on another member or making a personal attack. A lot of threads will start out as reasonable discussions, but will degenerate into 'AMD supporters are all inbred hicks' or 'That's typical of a right-wing liberal pro-drug murderous slime eater.' This is when they are labelled 'flame wars'.
