Would self-replicating SPAM worms be considered distributed computing?

Not in my book. "Evil" is what I consider them.

Most DC projects involve either trying to prove theorums, finding new medications, expanding our understanding of either the planet or the universe, or other causes that have to potential to benefit mankind.

They are supposed to be done with the PC owner's permission

self-replicating SPAM worms invade systems without permission, wastes money/resources that could be better spent, and are intended to make a small few rich, or possibly cause damage to infected systems, or install trojans so that crackers can do further harm to others with DoS attacks and other illegal intentions.

So no, to me they are NOT distributed computing. :|

No, but today in my inbox were 12 viagra/gambling/penis enlargement messages. Seems that these SPAM worms are picking up steam every day.

If it were turned around, where a DC project was created that would find and kill spammers (or their systems / networks) then I might be interested in putting my fleet to work on it.

I must admit that if that project really existed I wouldn't be running SETI anymore. I *HATE* spammmers. Spammers are lowlife scum abusing the internet for their own greed. In my opinion all bulk Emailers and cold calling phone solicitors need to die and the sooner the better. People shouldn't have to screen phone calls because they don't want to hear someone's sales pitch or sift through a hundred messages to look for a few legit Emails. I swear if I could push a button and kill every spammer in the world I wouldn't hesitate for a second. Some may think that's a little extreme but I'll bet they've never worked night shift and tried to leave their phone on while they sleep during the day.

I think that a DC project like that would create far more interest among non-DCers now than anything I could imagine!

12 in a day? Try about 12 an hour! :disgust:

I keep telling my wife that I don't need bigger breasts...the good thing is that we can both agree on that one! ;)

Or throw countless amounts of dead trees into landfills because companies send us all junk mail! I agree!

Heh, I just got my mail. In it I got 2 bills, 1 magazine (free sub of Maxim - thanks Hot Deals!), a bank statement, a car dealer ad in a large envelope with a handwritten "To" and "Return" address (they're so tricky), and the Flyer with some assorted ads tucked in it. A light day to be honest. No BMG or Columbia House CD/DVD offers, no AOL CDROM, no handful of supermarket coupons, and no political ads filled with empty promises. ;)

When I lived in my old place a few miles away we got a weekly free paper thrown in our driveways. I guess some consider it a newspaper of local stories but I considered it littering.

I've grown to love SpamBayes... after all, it's not the size that matters, it's the "motion of the boat in the ocean," so I certainly don't miss having to manually delete all those "all natural enlargement" solicitations. :)
