would putting a 45nm chip in save battery power

I've been researching that. I would have to say "yes" as long as they're at the same clock speed, but if it's a higher-clocked 45nm cpu or one with a lot more cache you'd probably end up with a faster computer and similar battery life. It'd probably just be cheaper to get a better battery :(

Not enough to merit much consideration.

You are better off (price-wise as well) just going with a larger battery for your laptop. Or perhaps a second battery if it supports it.

well, id also like the speed boost...and was hoping someone had attempted this before me.

I will probably find a 9cell, but I was just curious if its been done before or not.

What laptop do you have? Mobile versions always seem to be a lot more expensive. I'd also be somewhat Leary of upgrading a laptop cpu anyway. The cooling systems in laptops are carefully balanced between size, noise, and cooling capacity and so You would have to be very careful not to use a cpu that was generating significantly more heat than the original. For these and other reasons, laptop cpu upgrades seem to be pretty rare, even among enthusiasts.
