Would PC2700 work in a PC2100 laptop?

I saw a great deal for PC2700 SoDIMMs but wonder if I would encounter problems using it in a laptop (Compaq Presario x1000) not specifically designed for that speed? Blessings on all who can help.

Faster RAM typically will work at a lower speed, though there are no gaurantees. As always, YMMV. If the expense on the PC2700 isn't too much, go for it. As I stated, it should work at the lower speed. Good luck!

It should. It would be like putting PC133 ram in a box runnin PC100. Remember, the speed listed is only it's maximum speed, not minimum. EG: your pc2700 will run at pc2100 speed.

You may want to check thier website for compatibility issues. Some laptops will only work with memory designed for them. This was an issue when I was a tech at Gateway. Customers would buy ram at OD CC and other shops and it did not work.

It should work, I use 2700 in a motherboard that only accepts 2100 in my desktop. The ram isn't physically different, its just rated at higher speeds, if the motherboard is forcing a lower speed it should have no problems.

Laptops are different to desktops, they will often only work with specific rated memory modules and some will only work with modules from a specific supplier. The only way to confirm is to either bite the bullet and hope for the best or speak to the laptop manufacturers technical support.

Also....sometimes higher speed modules may be bigger....I had an instance where some PC100 wouldn't physically fit into a laptop...yet PC66 would. (same pins...it was the high of the stick that caused probs)
